 Eb Chadash barrels
Author: Aussie Nick

I have a 41.5mm Chadash barrel for Eb, and the tuning is pretty good with my current mouthpiece which is an Eb Viotto. I've found this new mouthpiece I like which is a Greg Smith. I haven't bought it because it makes me play very sharp to the point where on certain notes (like throat A) I can't bring the pitch down no matter how much I try.

Enough background info...

I have some old catalogues from Muncy winds and IMS. Muncy claims to have Eb Chadash barrels from 41-43mm, but the website doesn't list this. IMS only has 41.5mm listed. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if the Chadash is available in the 43mm? and would this actually help me? Just for the record, when I compared the Greg Smith mouthpiece beside mine, it was slightly shorter which I guess would explain why I'm playing sharp on it.

You can contact Guy directly via his website www.chadashclarinet.com
He should be able to help you. I had Clark Fobes make an Eb barrel for me a while back and he did a great job, it works beautifully.

If you are in the process of buying a Smith 'piece, check with him (Gregory@gregory-smith.com) and see about him hand-selecting a chadash that goes with it. He only offers this service if you buy the mouthpiece and barrel together.

I have two Eb-barrels from Guy. Both are 41,5 but one has a larger bore and therefor it plays lower. I use the standard size bore for the Eb and the larger bore for the D-clar. The larger size bore would be too flat on my Eb, an RC Prestige. Maybe this is a way for you to go, to have a larger size bore for your barrel.

I emailed guy and haven't had a responce yet. I'll write to Greg Smith and enquire about it, however it may be different in this case because I am buying it off my teacher.

Ok Greg Smith only supplies 41.5mm barrels. Guy Chadash told me the 43mm is available and to try Greg... I've been emailing WW&BW, Weiner, and IMS and they don't seem able to help. Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

I still think you shuld talk to Guy about a larger size bore for the 41,5 barrel. It helped me a lot with my D-clarinet which was way too sharp in the throut reg. but basically ok around B5-C6. A longer barrel would flatten C6 as well assuming that your instrument is in tune up there.
