"because here we don't have anything" ??? Tell that to Clark Fobes, Roger Garret, Annello, Walter Grabner, et al. Guess they beter pack it in. They seem to be wasting their time.

Bob A says it well [with sarcasm deserved], CB. [Too strong? Mark] To me, the instruments/accessories marketing is international, with nearly everything available HERE. Pricing is very competetive and multiple-unit trials are available. My earlier music store "exploration" in Germany didn't induce me to buy there. The bass clarinet mouthpiece comparison "charts" in catalogs list at least a dozen Makers, [products available here] and in addition we can name a goodly number of skillful Refacers, several are regulars on our BBoard and in the Yahoo Bass-Clarinet and Mouthpiece-Work Groups. Frequently, pro-custom mps are produced from a Selmer C* as a "blank", refaced as desired. To me, "untouched" Sel C* and "open" Pomarico mps and a refaced Pom are all very good. Best wishes on exploring French [why not Italian also] marketing. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Click on the "Search" link on the BBoard menu (Next to "Go To Topic" and "Help/Rules")

ok thank you very much. what i meant is that in the only store in my counry they don't have all those brands bob mentioned. i don't want to pay for something before trying it so i can't order. it's not like in the usa that they will order just for you to try, or like france where the clarinet factory is just a block away. i guess i'll have to wait until i go to europe.
thank you very much.

My apology Clarnibass. I read "here" to mean the US, not knowing where you were located. If you have access to this board you have access to all those I mentioned--pending customs etc. I know Walter will send mouthpieces on trial and Fobes also--but I don't know if that means to a non-US location. Maybe we need a thread on that, where they will send and where they cannot.

May I echo Bob, my apologies also. If I read "il" in your address, it just didn't register. I'd add Hite and others [help, please] to his suggestion of Fobes, also our numerous big dealers, I'm sure, will help provide consultation and trial of several selected mps. We both have been pleased with Dave Spiegelthal's work, and others of our BB friends. Much Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Am I right that you are in Iceland, clarnibass? Regardless, doing the mouthpiece trial bit three-at-a-time by mail order is a pain in the ... neck and the shipping costs can eat you up.

Woodwind and Brasswind (http://www.wwbw.com) has a bass clarinet mouthpiece chart in their catalog. It will give you tip openings for a variety of mouthpieces but not facings. Still, half a loaf .... I could not find it on their website but I didn't look real hard so you might have more luck. They would probably send you a copy of the catalog if you request it.

International Musical Suppliers does have both tip openings and facing lengths in their catalog and on their web site -- but only for soprano clarinets so they are not helpful.

Ballpark specifications for Vandoren bass clarinet mouthpieces are here:

http://www.Vandoren.com/Product/vanMID.htm

A mouthpiece chart was posted to the bass clarinet mail list. Unfortunately, the chart was a jpeg scan and was not stored in the archives. However, you can find the poster's address here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bass-clarinet/message/2376

Perhaps she would be willing to send you a copy and you might also want to read Roger Garrett's followup.

As Don mentioned above, there have been some recommendations for the Selmer C* mouthpiece (with or without refacing) in the past, particularly with reference to Buffet pro basses. Mouthpieces are so individual a preference that I hesitate to say this but I have also found an unrefaced C* to work extremely well both with a Buffet and a Noblet. This is the only time I have ever been able to make a Selmer mouthpiece work on a Buffet clarinet -- but that's me. In any case, you could probably choose a worse starting place -- and Selmer has a wide selection.

Since you specifically requested Selmer, here is the info from the WW&BW catalog, translated to mm using my trusty calculator:

C - 1.70mm
C* - 1.80
C** - 1.85
HS** - 1.905

C85 series:

105 - 1.70
115 - 1.85
120 - 1.905

These are the only Selmer models listed by WW&BW.

Best regards,
jnk

Fine, helpful info, Jack, TKS. I had placed C B in Israel, cant find my list of country abbreviations [if that's what "il" is], so I guess he'll tell us. My newest catalog is from I M S, with up-to-date prices, it is on-line and a copy is available via a www.intlmusicalsuppliers.com request. Selmer C*[and C85] B C mps are listed at $123 . Luck, Don

I found more information at the Woodwind and Brasswind site by clicking on specific bass clarinet mouthpiece offerings and scrolling to the bottom of the page where there is some "technical information" (the amount and nature of which varies by mouthpiece).

Selmer Standard Series Bass Clarinet Mouthpieces:

Model B: Medium Close / Medium
Model C: Medium / Long
Model C*: Medium Open / Long
Model C**: Open / Long
Model D: Open / Medium
Model E: Open / Medium
Model F: Very Open / Medium
Model G: Open / Long
Model H: Very Open / Medium
Model HS*: Closed / Medium
Model HS**: Open / Medium
Model S: Open / Short

Facing lengths on the three C85's I listed above are given as "medium" (27mm).

Best regards,
jnk
