 Contrabass tips

I have never played the bass or contrabass clarinet in my life. Now I am playing one in the wind ensemble at Miami University. I'm having problems with it and I do not know where to place the blame.

The main problem is that if I just put my lips together and blow, it will often play an overtone. If I slowly increase the pressure until it is at normal playing pressure it's fine. This especially happens with the lower notes. Above G (at the top of the treble staff) it's fine. The note comes out great every time. The notes between G and the A below it are the worst. Is this normal? What can I do about it? What are some good tips for playing the contrabass?

Double lip.

Loose embouchure.

Take more mouthpiece.

"Forrest Gump" like bassoonists. (Chin drawn back.)

The Uk Community Band I play with (Bristol Concert Wind Band) has just acquired a contra-alto. Any suggestions for a piece or two for a clarinet feature in our next concert showing off the full range of Eflat swinepipe + Bflat + Alto + Bass + Contraalto? We can field many Bflats of course, plus a couple each of the Eflat/alto/basses.

Chris - I did a transcription of Bach's BWV 562 Fantasia for 5 clarinets (soprano alto bass and contra). Contact me via Mark Charette if you're interested in giving it a test performance for me. Mark, sorry if this is naughty, but I can't access Chris' email address (nor he mine) and I certainly do not intend making any money out of this.

Diz,
Thanks for the offer. I've updated my profile to unhide my email address.
