hi, um. this is a very very new alto clarinet player here... yah.. is it necessary to reach the altissimo range within a year into playing? because nothing i'm currently playing seems to go that high yet. yet according to my instructor, it is important to reach the altissimo range to play more challenging pieces. so i'm rather confused. will someone please enlighten me? i'm desperately in need of more opinions.... x_x

heyz.. i'm back.. yah.. since i'm playing the alto clarinet, should i do the behrman at the same octave as the sop. clars? because they do get nonsensically high that i cannot even think of reaching them, let alone play them. yah, for example, exercise 29 is one of the more ridiculous ones that i've seen.. as it is very high to me... even the sop. clars can't do it, so how can i? please bear in mind i'm still really new to the alto.. thanx...

yeps.. but i can reach the altissimo!!! yay.. sometimes at least.. but not very consistent though.. and it's not really affecting my tone but i'm just scared i'll lose my low notes... but my tone seems to be getting better... the clarion range at least

I played alto for around 3 years consistently, throwing in some regular practice on Bb soprano and Bass for good measure. I played all sorts of literature between my high school's bands and my community band and never was called upon to play higher than a D, really. And that was occasional. Might have seen an E... but the alto, in my experience, generally seems to stay in the "lower to middle" range of things.
Long time no see, everyone... saw the alto post and had to add my 2 cents.

I have some clarinet quartet music that goes up to at least high F. I have seen a few clarinet choir pieces that go above D, but very few.
I try to use the throat keys as much as possible in the altissimo since the sound matches the clarion much better. I think that hitting the notes in the altissimo register is actually easier on the alto than soprano, but it can be harder to do it smoothly.
