 Old fake book wanted
Author: JMcAulay
Date:   2003-08-23 05:46

The thread on what to do with the old music reminded me of some that I cannot find.

About 30 years ago, I was given a new Yamaha piano. The dealer gave me a fake book. It is really hard to lose a grand piano but evidently not so tough to "misplace" a fake book (for a few years).

That blue-covered book was my favorite of all time, all that stuff up to about 1970 or so. Can anybody out there help? No, I don't want you to look for it in my house, I'd like to get a replacement. :)

Regards,
John

So I said to the Librarian, "It was a blue-covered" book. He said, "Title, Publisher, Date"?

Rite Bob, and then she hands you a request paper to fill in, happens each [of my] times! John, I recall having had the brown-covered "fake" book [1000 tunes?] and wanting the blue, for our "combo" back in those dark ages! From it I made up a list of tunes in playable keys, like most "jammers" do, may still have it, also a published list of popular music, ?somewhere? in my archives. Others, playing it by ear [now], may be able to help more! Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

John...Check out this fairly comprehensive list of fake books:

http://www.library.miami.edu/music/fakebooks.htm

View the contents of each, and see if any of them looks familiar ...GBK

Good Gosh, GBK, I just didn't realize there were this many "fakes" loose [?copyright-avoiders?] in the USA!! Prob. why enforcement was increased! I took a quick look at the "Big Red" [and I always thot B R referred to Okla U football, #1 , at the moment!] listings. Many familiar tunes, but still not what I recall, as brown and blue, perhaps red and green as well ! Is there anyone in Miami, motivated to look at this collection and report?? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Standard publishers who print "fake" books have generally received permission from copyright holders to include their material. Now "underground" publishers may be a different story.

The term "fake" in this context frequently means that it is designed to allow the player to improvise or "fake" an accompaniment based on the melody, chords, and other information containted in the book.

Well, I must have left the impression that I'm just pining my heart away for that very book and no other. I'm not *that* bold. I'm really not sure the book was legit, same as many of the earlier books. What I'd like is a replacement featuring stuff from the same calendar period, up to maybe 1970. I have plenty of music since then, but no book packed with music going back to 1929. Oh, yes: the color of the cover is not important.

Thanks for that fine link, GBK. There are two there (one Warner, one Columbia) that are interesting. I will try to find them. I'm not certain about the accuracy of the listings, though. One was for the "Dessert Song" -- by Sigmund Romberg?

Regards,
John

The dessert song was obviously written for the spoons and the tongs.

Here's an online index with a good search feature for your personal collection - it only looks in the books you have checked off. http://www.seventhstring.co.uk/fbindex.html

The "Real" book--different than the "New Real Book"--comes in Volumes #1 & #2 for C, Bb, and Eb players and vocalist.

There is also "The Book" used for many years in Chicago (USA), but only comes in C.

Both series contain hundreds of tunes good for gigs, but note that both of these "books" are supposedly illegal fake books and you need a "source" (which I am not). But I believe the original covers (long worn off) of my books were blue. For more precise info, JM, contact me via email.

William...There was also an underground copy of "The Book" which was handwritten in Bb.

Not that I would know who has a copy [wink] [wink] [wink] ...GBK

John,
I have the (ahem, cough cough) Real Book from the '70s era, Volume I in C, Bb and Eb versions and Volume II in Bb. Is this what you're looking for?

GBK....Your "Book" may not be the same one I (ahem, cough, cough) "know" to exist in some gig bags. Mine (opps--the jury will please disregard), the ones I've heard of, are all in C and contain lots of ethnic stuff. Ball back to your court.................(advan. in, I think)

And those Real Books from the 70's, lots of great, but more mainstream, tunes (or so I've heard, of course). Take Five.....................

The C "Book" I have seen [wink] [wink] has a simple blue cover, and is titled "1000 Standard Tunes".

The alternate Bb handwritten "Book" which I have seen [wink] [wink] was in looseleaf version and seemingly transcribed (amazingly) by the same person, as all tunes have matching handwriting.

JMcAulay and I discussed this by email yesterday. Perhaps he will add more, as I now plead the Fifth ...GBK

I too have been "in touch" with JM and sent him a scan of the inside cover of mine (opps, again). Also, we may be discussing different books as the covers of the ones which I "have knowledge of" are simply titled, "The Book".

(And, in conclusion, I would also like to plead a Fifth (especially as I stopped drinking them years ago).

Boys & Girls,

I used to make my living playing bass (around 20 years back now) in jazz bands.

Most of the "fake" books around even then were authorized versions - some people copied the authorized "fake" versions and blanked out the copyright notice and would try & resell them as handwritten "fake" books to make a quick buck.

The big "handwritten" copy is an authorized fake (I forget the publisher, but I had a copy). The only true fake books I ever worked with were obviously handwritten, had few or no lead lines, just the changes. You were expected to know the lead lines & be able to improvise on them; the changes were for the rhythm section (like me ... except when playing stuff by Mingus or Brown or Blanton or Wright or ... :)

All's I know is that, here in the DC area since at least 20 years ago when I started playing jam sessions and jazz clubs, there was only one back that everybody had, it was sold "under the table" and was called "The Real Book". Originally in concert pitch, then came versions transposed for Bb and Eb instruments, then a Volume II. Has both the lead line and the changes. Around here when you call a tune from "The Real Book" just about everyone knows what you're talking about, but clearly this is not universal even within the US.

Thanks to everyone. I now have a lead on one older book that may provide what I want, but I'm still looking. If anyone has an older book in a personal collection that's no longer wanted, please let me know by email.

Funny, I have never seen so much winking, coughing, and throat-clearing on a thread before.

Regards,
John
