On Eddie Daniels:
Listening to Eddie's old & new CDs while traveling cross-country with my family, I had the good fortune to visit with him at his lovely home in Santa Fe, NM.
Eddie & his wife greeted us with fresh fruit and spring water, and then showed us around their spacious home in the mountains surrounding Santa Fe. It's wonderful to see a great & successful clarinetist with the fruits of his labors so beautifully expressed in a warm home, with exquisite taste.
If any of you know Eddie, and are in the Santa Fe area, don't miss dropping by his home to see something really special. Do call him first before dropping by.

To JJM: Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience with us.
I look upon your invitation for anyone to visit Eddie as genuine. I believe that the great majority of clarinetists are gregarious in nature and that they genuinely enjoy getting together to talk about their favorite instrument. (I still love that story about Larry Combs having a meal next to Pete Fountain and neither knew who the other was until introductions were made!!)
To William and ken: Although JJM may not enjoy the stature that Eddie does, (but then again, maybe he does!), I do know that John is a successful Broadway musician who also makes his living by playing the clarinet and also through teaching.
And, even though I've only talked to John a couple of times on the phone for a few minutes, I sense that if I were to ask him if I could stop over, (I live around 50 miles from him), I believe I would be welcomed and have a great time. (I'm just too intimidated to ask...)
I think...what I'm trying to say is that people who take up playing the clarinet are, for the most part, friendly people who would indeed open their doors to other fellow enthusiasts.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi John,
The better point is "It's wonderful to see a great & successful clarinetist with the fruits of his labors ..." which really can just as easily apply to your success through hard work.
Takes one to know one!

Thank you for all your kind thoughts.
I really didn't mean for you all to just drop by Eddie's wonderful place, I just needed to rave about the house and his hospitality. Eddie is generous, but probably wouldn't enjoy uninvited guests.
On the other hand many young players who know me, or have heard me play, do drop by my house in NJ from time to time. And, yes, the clarinet community is generally a very friendly and open one.
Yes, Mark, Eddie's wife is a fine musician and their home features 2 large practice/study studios, one for each.
Again, if you know Eddie, or any fine musician, call them when you're in their town, just to say hello...you might just get invited over for a big surprise.

What pleased me most about this post was not the cavallier suggestion: "don't miss dropping by his (Eddie Daniel's) home": a comment that would make any Victorian cringe. Rather I am pleased to hear that a person who has dedicated his life to playing the clarinet can make a good living and live a comfortable life. He really is among a select few clarinets in the world who can actually make good living just playing the clarinet; what a wonderful position to be in.
