 The life of a reed...
Author: CharmOne

I had a couple reeds for the past 4+ months now. Size 3, soft, rich round tone, and aware if they would just gonna die on me sometime soon! I have my third one broken in already and had it for a couple months, with the same feel and touch as the other two, but I'm not concern unlike the two. They all are vandorens and I play all of them on the average of an hour to three hours. They all play great, but how long do they last? Comments please?

Thanks,

CharmOne~

Don't think there's a definitive answer to that one as it depends on so many factors. Assuming the reed is inherently "a good one" I think it depends mostly on how much rest you give it between plays. "Mostly" probably means about 50%. I am playing reeds that have been in service for over 4 months just now.

Like it's said above, it depends on a lot of factors. I say don't worry why or how it's lasting "beyond its years", but just be happy that it is. And have some spares should the day come when they finally expire.

I would suggest rotating among several reeds daily. I tell my students to always have (at the absolute minimum) 2 reeds in the break in stage, 2 reeds at performance stage, and 2 reeds which are past their prime and still suitable for practice.

Most of my colleagues and myself rotate among many more than 6 reeds at a time.

Ricardo Morales once told me that while playing in the Met he would change reeds after each act ...GBK

I have had some reeds last up to 8 months...and play superbly! Alot of it is rotating reeds and using dry storage...some prefer wet storage but this never yields the results for me personally...

I am lucky to get a fortnight out of a reed, four months is incredible. When they finally give up I would gold plate them and mount them on a plaque. I would warn against keeping reeds too long. When it comes to using a new one you are going to find it extremely hard, at four months of age reeds are nowhere near their initial strength so I wouldn't leave it too long before I had some others ready to play.
