I have a chance to get a mint condition Silva-Bet metal Bettoney clarinet. Are these good instruments as compared say to the Silver King or top line metal Selmers?

As Packard [fine autos] used to advertise, "Ask the man who owns one!" We have several "metals-posters", however J Mc A seems to have the largest collection-knowledge, lets hope he will respond! My knowledge is limited, but IMHO the S-B was among the best! Buy it! Don

Silva Bets and Selmers and Silver Kings are all among the very best metal clarinets made. The Silva Bets and Selmers have perhaps a more classical sound; the Silver King is more forceful and perhaps more suited to jazz ensembles. IMHO, of course.
In your case, getting a Silva Bet is mint condition is a great opportunity. I'd jump on it!

Not me, Don. I wish I knew a lot more about metal Clarinets, and I haven't owned one in over fifty years.
But from what I've seen on the BB, the Silva-Bet is a fine one. If I were going to buy a metal Clarinet, I would have it on my short list.

In full agreement, Bob D, yes, the S-B was [as far as I know] Cundy- Bettoney's best metal, there is an old patent, to Harry B, on it and its adjustable barrel, will post its # if it cannot be found in our archives. I wish that were true --- I'm the same guy who not long ago confused you and Jim on this very same forum, remember? (Or perhaps you were being a bit sarcastic, in which case, point taken.....) Nonetheless...Jim Lande IS our resident authority on metal clarinets, and very knowledgeable in general on older woodwind instruments.

It turns out that the person who contacted me about the Silva-Bet was mistaken. He has sent some pictures and the horn is actually a Haynes Silver double wall clarinet.
