Mozart for B flat with piano
Author: Jerry
Date:   2003-08-18 20:18

I've tried several searches on this board.
I called Clarinet Spot.

I could not find any sheet music for Mozart's Clarinet Concerto for B flat clarinet with Piano accompaniment.

Does this exist? If so, can anyone provide a source or publisher?

Thanks.

It does exist. I have a copy at home that I bought at my local music store. I'll post the publisher tonight after I get home from work if no one has posted by then.

I find that hard to believe.... There are a ton of different versions. Check www.luybenmusic.com
www.jeanne-inc.com
www.sheetmusicplus.com
www.jwpepper.com...
Also any store that sells band/orchestra solos and ensembles should have several different publishers available (or at least the ones here in Houston).

Jerry...There are at least seven versions for Bb clarinet and piano.

The publishers, in alphabetical order:

Billaudot (ed: Dangain) #52405553

J. B. Cramer/Boosey and Hawkes (ed: Brymer) #WCB0157

Cundy-Bettoney Company (ed: Bettoney) #CU734

Carl Fischer (ed: Bellison) #W1668

International Music Company (ed: Kell) #1878

G. Schirmer (ed: Simon) #50261780

Southern Music Company (ed: Tournerie) #55280

None of the above compare to the more scholarly A clarinet versions by either Schott, Breitkopf or Bärenreiter ...GBK

Read http://www.clarinet.org/Research/1998/Koons.htm for a very good comparison of published editions.

Thanks, Mark. I had actually printed that out 8 months ago and forgot about it. Phoning what I thought was a decent supplier, and hearing they had not a one, threw me.

For B flat with piano, do you think Schirmer would be as good as any? Breitkopf and Hartel (Trio Di Clarone) seemed interesting because of the lower ranges covered, but appears only available in A.

Moart, by any other publisher, is still..........Mozart.

I have always played the Bellison edition, but that is only because I am older and studied that one first. The newer publications probably have more historically correct notations--but all are still, Mozart.

Also, most of the finer piano accompanists that I know can play the accompaniment for either clarinet in Bb or A--you just have to tell them which instrument you are holding in your hand(s).

I may be a bit obsessive-compulsive (so my wife suggests), but I never tire of replaying the Mozart Concerto in A (or Bb).

Jerry,

Just to throw another variable at you. As I recall there are two types of Bb version:

(1) the clarinet part is transposed to B major

(2) the piano part is transposed to Bb

If you are buying the concerto to learn it but have no immediate performance prospects, then I would recommend you buy one of the A versions or a Bb version with the piano part transposed.

If you are buying the concerto to learn it to perform in the near future with a pianist, then I would buy a Bb version with the piano part transposed. Then you won't have to relearn the piece in the future if you do get an A clarinet.

If you are buying the concerto to perform with an orchestra on your Bb clarinet in the near future, then the version you need will be one with the clarinet part transposed (nasty key, though). However, in this last case, if it were me, I would try to borrow an A clarinet or try to convince the conductor to do a different concerto written for the Bb clarinet, perhaps Weber No. 1 or Spohr No. 1 or Krommer Op. 36 or Crusell Op. 5 (in F). Parts should be easy to come by (and not too expensive) for the Weber. Krommer, Spohr and Crusell might be more expensive.

As far as which publisher's edition to purchase -- most of the serious clarinetists I have talked to (a limited set, however) recommend either Breitkopf or Barenreiter and say to avoid the Delecluse version (expensive with wrongheaded "cadenzas" by Ibert -- I don't think it's on your list in any case). For most people buying their first copy, however, I would say it's six in one, a half-dozen in the other. The differences are subtle. You won't be able to play the bassett clarinet notes in any case and any edition will give you hours of enjoyment. The International version is under $10, has a good sturdy cover for the piano part and has clear print and good pagination as I recall. The articulation is reasonable and, without an autograph score, nobody knows what Mozart actually wrote, anyway. (Purists, go ahead and flame me for my criteria. [hot])

Best regards,
jnk
