 MPC fitting problem
Author: PGJ

Hello, all, I´m new to this board, have played for 50+ years as an autodidact amateur on the same horn (Kohlert Bb). A few weeks ago
it developed a long crack through the top end of the lower tube,
I started to look for a new horn, found a 2´nd hand Marigaux made by
SML, Paris. I tested it with my Kohlert MPC, and getting home and after
washing the new MPC ( Vandoren 5RV), it wouldn´t fit in the
Marigaux barrel, so..., What is standard, can I expect to find the
same MPC with different mounting diam´s, or will I have to look for
a new barrel. I can ofcourse use my old MPC particularly as I´m used
to it, but would like to know the alternatives.
Some dimensions in millimeters :
Barrel: Kohlert = 21.9
Marigaux= 22.1 to 22.15
MPC: Kohlert =21.6 (wooden)
5RV = 22.25
old extra(René Duval) where diam changes = 22.0,
end( filed down ) =21.8 to 21.9

Hi PGJ- welcome to our BBoard. Hopefully some of our pro and highly skilled repairers will give you better advice than mine. While the variations in tenon/socket diameters are quite small, some due to differences in country-of-origin/ages, etc, my first suggestion is just to "do what comes naturally". Try many mps [from your repairer's old mp box et al]. If only the cork, not the tenon itself, is too large/tight, it can be sanded to fit, if too loose, either get new corking or temporarily, use a strip of masking tape [or paper] to make it fit snuggly . I'd NOT try to change the barrel's socket size [by sanding/machining], unless for single mp useage. . Perhaps you may wish to "dedicate" a certain mp to each clarinet, you could have the same "facing" applied to all!!. {HELP needed}, Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

A couple of years ago, I posted here about a problem getting a new mouthpiece to fit into the barrel of my old Kohlert. I got a couple of newer horns and wanted to be able to use my mouthpieces on all of the horns.

Several people on this board told me I must be mistaken because they could use their newer mouthpieces on their old horns. They insisted that all horns had the same dimensions. However, none of them used an old Kohlert as their example of the horn they had no problem with.

The dimension I mea sured on the Kohlert was similar to what you measured. The other horns were just slightly larger. The difference was just enough that the bottom of the mouth piece was binding against wood. I ended up having the barrel of my Kohlert turned about a half millimeter larger by my repairman and have found no problems since..

There is no absolute standard but 22mm is about the average mouthpiece tenon diameter, modern that is. Barrells vary but it is no problem to fit a mouthpiece if it smaller just by increasing the cork. The main problem occurs when the mouthpiece is too large. In this case the barrell requires reaming up to size, if there is some historical value this is not advised but if you intend using modern mouthpieces from now on then no problem. The other option is getting another barrell which will accept the modern mouthpiece.The only radically different sizes are German Wurlitzer which has a barrell which is a good deal larger than standard, Vandoren make mouthpieces for this size and Zinner blanks are also available. There are some smaller sizes around 18mm which was the standard Boosey size prior to WWII. I have never heard of this problem with an SML before.

Well... if the modern mouthpiece is comparable to others, and you wish to preserve some flexibility in mouthpiece choice, why not take a little 200 grit sand paper and a stout piece of dowel rod to let out the top of the barrel?

You may also experiment with an aftermarket barrel the same way, making the cork tenon on your SML larger to accomodate the modern size.

My limited experience with these less common horns is that they play best with the original barrels, however.
