 Q's & A's on Leaks
Author: CharmOne

On Saturday, I had lessons with my teacher and as I started to play, I tended to squeek from transitioning from the B-flat key to registered C. My teacher started to check my clarinet out and found there were some leaks. I understand how a leak in one of my keys that can make a huge difference in my playing performance. But is it really nessary to have it fixed before entering a High School band this fall?

Comments please? Thanks...

I would say yes you should have them fixed.

If you don't you will ultimately start to compensate for the leaks. Adding tension to your fingers or using alternate fingerings or my favorite using right and left hand at the same time to compensate. It took me a long time to get over using bad instruments in my past. I had all those habits and more.

Gosh Sakes, YES. You may only need a"playing condition" repair, less costly than a full overhaul. It is neded for you/your teacher to sort out inst-caused problems from player-caused embouchure/fingering problems. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Would you drive a car that has brakes like this?

Would you get into an elevator that stops on most floors?

Kids with gear in poor repair drive me nuts.

You wouldn't be allowed on the rink without a helmet, or pads, would you?

Learning to play a leaky clarinet is like learning to drive a car with 4 leaky tyres, leaked brake fluid, and leaked hydraulic steering fluid.

You just don't! An EXPERIENCED player has the skills to 'play through' a leaking instrument, but a beginner most certainly does not.

Playing a clarinet that is not up to par is an emergency type thing that should only be attempted by an experienced player (in an emergency). You have time and this is not an emergency. Get the horn fixed.

Should a Clarinet 'Roadworthy' and licensing system be introduced?
