 What's up with wwbw?
Author: Mark P. Jasuta

Hi,
I ordered a Vandoren Reed Resurfacer (wwbw part # VARR) from wwbw. I saw it in their printed summer sale 25th anniversary catalog page 15, third item from the bottom of the second column for $9.99. So I mailed the order form in with a money order. A week later I get my order form and money order back with a note that the item is either no longer being manufactured or is no longer available through "our company" (wwbw). This doesn't sound right. A call to customer service made no sense, I was told they carried it back in 2000. Didn't it just come out? Maybe they don't want to give it to me for $9.99.

If you go to their website it is currently on a 2-3 week back order, and you can add it to your cart. (I just checked before I wrote this.)

I just received an order from them. Four days from placing the order on line to delivery at my front door. I have never had a bad experience with them and they seem to be trying to compete pricewise with the other big online catalogues.

Hi,

I have never had a problem with ordering from wwbw. As William stated, 4 days from on-line to my door. When I ordered on-line, I knew right away if the item was in stock or not; same was true when I phoned in an order. Mark, maybe mailing was the problem (I did not know that anyone still mailed in an order form)?

Hank,
I mailed it in to get the $9.99 price. If you have been following the changes over the years, you noticed when the web first was first used by merchants the web prices were cheaper than in their printed catalog (to get you to use the web). Now, just the opposite is true. I have gotten some good deals recently, which is what I prefer over instant gratification.

MPJ,

I've found with WWBW that a phone call with credit card in hand will usually get the best price you find, including beating a competitor's price. They have been very good about honoring the lowest price they advertise, whether in print or on the web. Operator can tell you right on the phone if they've got stock as well. Saves the guess work.

Maybe you can find another merchant (IMS?) to honor the $9.99 price.

Cheers,

Mark

the vandoren reed re-surfacer that they were showing off at Clarinetfest (with a frosted glass abrasive surface) may have replaced the old one on the production line, and it may be difficult for wwbw to restock (or they may not want to)... just a guess

I wonder if the $9.95 price referred to the old Vandoren resurfacer, which has been discontinued.
There was a discussion on the BB a while back about the new resurfacer, which is made of etched glass and which comes with an etched glass stick that mimicks the action of Dutch rush.
I balked at the price, about $40, but I think it is sensationally good. Since buying it, I seldom come across a reed that I can't adjust to my way of playing.

Hi JM,

Not that I'm against USPS (I have a son that is a letter carrier). Whatever gets you the best price but msloos may have the best idea.
