Julius Baker, one of the great musicians of the 20th century, has died at age 87.

His intensity could dominate the entire NY Philharmonic, yet he could pull back and play with the greatest delicacy, as he did for years in the Bach Aria Group.

Friends who studied with him say he could be rough as a teacher, but only because he held them to the highest standards. He will be missed.
