Hi,
When I start music college in september I have an audition for the Conservatoire Orchestra. The registrar has suggested I prepare some excerpts. I have the Temple Savage first book of excerpts.
Any recommendations since nothing has been set?

Hmmmm how much orchestral experience have you had, and have you had to do these types of auditions before. It's kind of hard to suggest excerpts for you, having no idea what stage your interpretative skills are at. I'm inclined to suggest an excerpt from either bethoven 4 or 6, maybe something like Tchaikovsky 5 opening, Mendelssohn Mid Summer Nights Dream Scherzo, and perhaps something like Weber Der Freischutz... Make sure you pay close attention to phrasing, dynamics, tempo and probably most importantly- rhythm! I think these would be good ones to begin with, but what do others think?

Rob -
Prepare what's on all the auditions. To begin with, you have to have the Mendelssohn Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo and all the Beethoven 6th solos cold. All the solos in all the Brahms and Beethoven symphonies and those from the Tchaikovsky 4th, 5th and 6th and the opening of the Sibelius 1st are also likely to be called for.

I have spoken to the Conservatoire and the orchestral excerpt is entirely my own choice and by the sounds of things optional.
What do you recommend?

If you have never studied excerpts you should probably start with the standards mentioned above. What could probably get you through a short audition (most school ensemble auditions are short...10 minutes at the most I would imagine)
Brahm's 3rd Symphony 1st and 2nd movements
Beethoven's 6th Symphony 1st and 2nd movements
Beethoven's 8th Symphony Minuet
Mendelssohn Mid Summer Night's Dream
Get recordings and full parts if possible and spend as much time listening as playing. These excerpts are all tricky but playable. Good luck!

During my college playing (when a music major, that is) all of the above were looked at, as well as a slow movement from Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. It's high and quiet and really hard to play in tune and keep from grunting, so if you can play it well, its pretty impressive. Anybody remember the exact name of the the excerpt? Don Juan by Strauss was on a couple auditions I had to play, it's a toughy...

There are numerous excerpt books available. I have one edited by Daniel Bonade, which contains most (if not all) of the abovementioned pieces. If you go to sheetmusicplus.com, jwpepper.com a similar website and search for "clarinet excerpts" or "clarinet orchestral excerpts" you should get a list of books and what excerpts they contain.

One difficult excerpt is the "Bartered Bride" by Smetana. It has a lot of fast staccato tonguing in it. All college orchestras play the "Unfinished". Good luck!
