Does this material produce all sorts of "fuzzies" on your clarinet reed should you put your reed in the case wet? I know my clarinet case does, but I don't know what material that is and I'm just afraid that the felt will leave small deposits on the back of my reed and that's the main reason that I haven't bought one yet.

ive never heard of felt being used in reed cases because all the ones ive used are plastic. the "fuzzies" that i talk about when i say "fuzzies" are the mold that grows on the reed. you should dry your reeds off or at least get most of the moisture out of them before putting them in the case. i take them and put them on a flat surface and run my thumb with the grain down the reed to get moisture out. if i were you, i'd get a plastic case(vandoren makes a nice one for about 10 dollars, if your reeds get moldy though, take the dessicant out)

I've never (knock on reed) had moldy reeds. I'm talking about as though there was lint on the reed that came from it rubbing while wet against the felt. THat's what I'm worried about. I have a plastic reed holder, but want one of those 12 reed holders. And most (all?) of those are basically the reeds are pressed against glass or a mirror by a felt backing.

I've used the same Harrison reed case for the past 25+ years and have never had the problem you are worried about. In fact, before you brought it up, the thought of any shedding of the fabric material onto the reeds was something I never even gave any thought to.
The Harrison reed case is used to transport reeds to and from performances. After performances, all reeds are squeezed between cigarette paper to remove as much moisture as possible, then placed back in the case.
Upon returning home, all reeds are always removed from the case and placed to dry on a 16" x 16" x 1/4" piece of glass, where all reed work is done... GBK

Very interesting. I purchased that style vd reed case a few years ago and had black mold problems on reeds stored in it. I took the dessicant "stick" out as I couldn't imagine how it could work encased in plastic. Still got mold.
I switched to other reed containers and the mold ceased. Recently I purchased the new vd reed holder (8 reeds) with the flip top and have not had a mold problem with it. p.s. I even drilled holes in the first vd case to no avail.

maybe your reeds got moldy and some of the bacteria stayed on the case itself? did you try soaking it in rubbing alcohol or the reeds in hydrogen proxide?

There is a previous discussion about this with many useful comments. I started having problems with black mould when I bought a new reed case. I had to throw out a few reeds and put the reed case in the sun to disinfect it.
Now I wet my reeds in a little film canister filled with water and a few drops of either anti-bacterial mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide, only just enough to do the job, it doesn't take much. (As has been discussed, pure hydrogen peroxide or alcohol would probably damage the reeds.) The reeds are stored after wiping them dry with a cloth. While playing, the reed case is left open to allow for circulation around the reeds. And, no, the felt doesn't bother the reeds.

WRT VD reed cases:
I believe that the reason the reeds mold in this case is because the moisture in the case from the reed can't escape. I pulled the center part of the case out of the end piece and cut relief slots into the end piece of the case. No more mold problems.

Matt...I drilled holes in both sides of the case body but never considered opening the ends. Will give it a try. Does anyone know how or if the vd dessicant tubes work?
