I'm in need of breathing excersises...
Author: Kristen

I want to improve my playing, and someone suggested to me that I warmup before playing by doing some breathing excersises, but they didn't give me any examples. Can someone help?

Thank you,

Kristen

I did not like to post a second hand knowledge. But since there are no posting, I would try.

In short, ask a voice teacher(vocal instructor).

I have a small booklet published by Wind Player magazine titled Flute Master class. In it a professional flutist writes about what she recently knew from an Opera singer about breathing. Just like this.

1.Wind players are inclined to keep his air exhaled too long. This is for a harsh sound of inhailing air before attacking next phrase. This jeopadizes a song. Singers give a little more time to inhale air and wind players should.

2.Singer's breathing exercize:
Open your legs and bend knees just like a squat position.
The reason for this position is that if stand upright legs will support abdomen and lessen breathing exercize effects.

In this position, calmly and very steadily(at a same rate of absorpion) inhale air as much as possible. And then exhale air at steady pace. Smaller rate as possible.(It is very difficult to control exhale of air at smallest steady pace.) This should be done to a point to feel the lung is perfectly vacant(although this is not possible physically).
Take a seconds this exhaling takes every time. At first it is very short. But it becomes very long, maybe 5 times longer than the time at first practice.

The singer also adviced the flutist that many wind players are misunderstanding what organ takes charge of breathing. They use stomach too much. No, it is an organ digesting food. Lung, of course is in charge of breathing.

But above is only a second hand knowledge. That is why I suggested at first to consult a voice teacher.
