I mentioned parenthetically last December that I'm going to college in Philadelphia this fall. Some people said they could give me advice- now I'm asking. I'm going to Philly for four days to get to know the city a little better the week after next (I'm actually going to college in a southwestern suburb) and I'd like to scout out some places. I'm looking for....
1. Somewhere to get reeds fairly cheaply (V12s)
2. Somewhere to get emergency repairs quickly when my A clarinet's B key gets misaligned again...I know it's going to happen....sometime.
3. Somewhere to get sheet music (classical)
4. Somewhere to get classical CDs- is Tower Records best or is there a classical specialty store or used CD store that is particularly good?
Since I'm car-less, anything accessible by public transportation would be appreciated.
I can pick any clarinet teacher in the area. I'm doing research and I'm not sure if any of the major teachers would take a non-performance music major. I'm going to a very academic college so, though performance is important to me, I'm not going to be practicing four hours a day (homework four hours a day- definitely). I'm going to talk to the music department at my college to see who they recommend and my current teacher has given me some names. Just as a (probably overly-ambitious) thought, does anyone know if Ricardo Morales is taking students currently?
Thanks,
Micaela

--It's been a few years but South Street Tower Records "Classical Annex", located west 1/2 block (on South Street) and across the street from the main store has 40,000+ blue-blood titles...best overall selection in the city I know of. As for teachers you could try Ron Rueben. He's been Philly's 3rd/bass clarinetist for 30 years. He's one spectacular player, unpretentious musician and charming guy. If he can squeeze you in he will and won't ask to see your pedigree. v/r Ken

I was in Philadelphia recently and remember that there is a music store withing walking distance of Rittenhouse Square called Pressers. The locals call it Teddys I beleieve. I am sorry that I cannot give you the exact location, however I am sure that by looking for the name Theodore Presser you will be able to find on the internet. If I remember, it is on Chestnut between 17th and 18th. They seemed to have a moderate to good amount of sheet music. I believe that they also sold supplies, but I could be wrong.
Regards,
Brandon
