I've heard that the Greg Smith mouthpiece was designed for Buffet clarinets. Does that mean that it won't work very well on LeBlanc instruments? Or will a Buffet Chad/Moenig barrell be needed to act as mediator?

Greg Smith mouthpieces are excellent and should work well on ANY clarinet, although some believe that if a large bore mismatch exists (as it might with a Boosey & Hawkes 10-10, to use the most extreme example) there might be intonation problems when using ANY standard-bore mouthpiece, including Greg Smith's. By all means try some of his mouthpieces with your existing barrel before you start buying additional equipment. (I'm speaking off the cuff here, if I'm wrong, please correct me, Greg!).

I'm glad that Dave S "broke the ice" about possible "bore mismatch", which prob. very few mp "testers" check for. I cant and dont speak about G S's mps, but, from the standpoint of "fluid dynamics", IMHO sizeable "steps" in bore matching, mp to barrel and barrel to UJ, will cause "eddy-currents" which MAY affect tone quality. I have "experimented" with several [nominal, big-bore] 15.0 mm cls., Selmers and LeBlancs of the '50-80's, and prefer the good sounds and response chacteristics that I derive from well-matched bores. A slender little finger is desireable for the "feel" determination, but these "steps" are visible when looked for carefully. Just my thots re: compatability. Don

At the flow rates/diameter of a clarinet - very few if any eddy currents would form (the flow rate/bore diameter is well below the critical point where eddy currents would develop).
HOWEVER - you would get pressure wave reflections and refraction from the the mismatch.

I use the little finger (still slender) test on barrels as well. Seems to work just fine. With the sections though, the calipers are the answer.
