Assuming your clarinet is set up correctly (pads opening at the correct height), not in disrepair (cracks, vent tube needing to be cleaned, pad skins not loose, etc...) or any related equipment issues, there are certain fingering combinations which can help the throat tones (Bb4, A4, Ab4).

A search on this board under resonance fingerings will give you some helpful fingering suggestions to try...GBK

Is it Bb4 by chance? Check the opening height of the pad under the A key touch. (It's the pad that closes with the thumb hole.) If it is not opening enough your Bb4 will be muffled.

The resonance fingerings are good. Try playing the Bb with the side-key fingering. The A key and the third side-key up. Is that one ok? If so, I think it's something with your register key. Try taking the register key off (very simple), and cleaning out the register key tube with a pipecleaner. and if that STILL doesn't work, then you probably need to take it to tech cause the height is probably messed up.

-- This fingering is probably best suited for trills and runs. On sustained notes where tone is critical, the standard fingering applying right-hand vent keys will help bring out the best tonal qualities of the note. Watch those resonance fingerings, too many will flatten pitch and dull the sound. Find the best one for your horn and use it as a primary wherever possible.

Perhaps, I've been one lucky camper over the years but every B-flat I've ever owned had standard fingering, forefinger/thumb Bb4s that were well in tune. I always thought it was the note's inherent stuffiness and inflexibility that made it so notorious...not pitch. v/r Ken

Silvite, this is prob. the most-discussed "shortcoming" of our "standard" Bb clarinet. GBK and sfalexi's discussions and in partic. Ken's experience on [prob] high quality insts, at least points out that higher cost does likely produce better cls, as is my experience. RE: the Mozart, which is for and usually played by an extended range cl in the key of A, so those Bb-sounding notes are B naturals on it, much improved quality!!! The maintenance and fingering suggestions made above usually satisfy most players, I usually consider this note's character as the first question in evaluating a horn's capability. Just my thots. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

All of the throat tones are disgusting. For the Bb, I usually put down my right hand with the c# key. Or I use the side key fingering. If none of these are possible, I use fast, controlled, full air. Hope this helps a little.

Don, good point, I forgot that the concerto was played on the A clarinet on my recording.
I have tried the new fingering and I am pleased how intune my clarinet is.
so iI should probably start trying to use this fingering more often and less of the old one.
