 HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

Hey everyone!
Im new to the board and i just wanted to ask some questions and get some advice...thank u for reading this. Im a high school student going into 10th grade and i started playing clarinet in 6th grade and doubled on alto sax last year. Umm...i just recently got the position of librarian in my band and we get to pick the music to a certain extent which is cool. I was wondering if there is any wind ensemble music that you would recommend for high school that has an interesting clarinet part or a solo or something like that. Also, if there is any jazz music that has a clarinet part at all that you would recommend or an interesting alto sax part. umm...i dont know how many of you were in marching band but if you have any suggestions for stands music or show music please let me know...especially if it has a clarinet or alto sax part that is awesome. I also wanted to know if there is a good site or place to find a "Rhapsody in Blue" score or good arrangement with the awesome clarinet solo in the beginning because im in love with that song. I want to play that song my senior year and play the clarinet solo so i want to start working on it now so i can have it perfect and prove to him that i can do it and im going to work on it with a private teacher i know that it is really difficult but i feel that im capable of getting it good enough to play as a high school student will a lot of dedication even though u all are going to think im crazy. What solo for our solo and ensemble festival should i work on? In 8th grade I played Stamitz Concerto Klarinetten in B and last year I did not go because of family problems. I have the Mozart concerto and Weber Concerto III but I wanted to know if there was something you would recommend that would be challenging because otherwise I will get bored with it easily, I would rather get an Excellent on a Grade 6 than a superior on a grade 3 or something like that. I wanted to get a new clarinet since I am advancing. I have an awesome clarinet which is the best that I have played as far as student models and is perfect condition...a Yamaha student model plastic clarinet with a vandoren B45 mouthpiece, rovner ligature and mitchell lurie reeds strength:4, but I wanted a wood clarinet to get a warmer tone. I was thinking about getting an R13 but I wasnt sure the best place to get it or what mouthpiece ligature etc i should have with it. Ive heard that Bay mouthpieces give a nice warm tone is that true? just trying to look at all my options...I know this is long so thank you very much for reading it I appreciate any comments and advice and feel free to email me at any time since I might not find this post again lol but ill try. Thank You!!!!
Love Always,
Kristen

Are you taking private lessons? If not, I'd recommend to find a good teacher. They can probably advise you pretty well on solo pieces and equipment setup.

There's a Weber III?

Even simple pieces can be plenty challenging... there's always more music in it than you think there is at first glance. But you probably mean "finger and tongue" challenging, in which case the Webers should last you plenty long. Playing all the notes correctly is only the first step toward playing a piece well.

Personally, I wouldn't overdo trying to find pieces with extravagant clarinet solos just yet, but that may just be my personality talking. You're already working on clarinet solo pieces, after all. I might focus on blending well with the ensemble if I was in your position... intonation, tone quality, consistency of sound, all the things that I didn't think of in high school and now wish I had.

What to find for the band do play probably depends more on how advanced the average player is, as well as how you blend together as an ensemble. It's a group effort.

As far as marching band music is concerned, the clarinets are barely heard, unless they're the only ones playing, or if they have something loud and contrary to the rest of the ensemble. That said, I found in high school that clarinetists like to be kept busy on the field and will play better if the music is more complicated... so knock yourself out!

As for Rhapsody in Blue, does your school have any incredibly fantastic pianists? IMHO, that can make or break the piece more than the clarinet.

Good luck!

Hey thank you for replying...i had a clarinet teacher and then she moved to ohio but im going to call the university of miami and get a new teacher.
Oops...i meant Weber concerto no. 1 i was thinking of an old solo sorry.
I normally won't play solos and every1 knows that but im ok if I kno my material so I have something to prove to everyone. Also, Ive been reading some books that have definately helped me as far as getting nervous when I play by myself. I needed to do something because when my band director tells me to improv in jazz band i start shaking and just want to die but its getting better. Yeah, my band director is an awesome piano player and my friend was taught by him, but I want to play the band arrangement of rhapsody in blue not just me playing the solo with a piano player.

I wasn't saying for you to play solo with a piano player. I suppose when I hear rhapsody in blue in my head, like most of Gershwin, I think heavy piano.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by this.

Good luck, in any case.

i think working on the "music man" would be a lot of fun. there is some great music and also some great marching music. i.e. 76 clarinets (or something like that)
