hi, i'm thikning of getting a morgan mouthpiece for my bass clarinet. it is very expensive (172$) and i can't try it before i buy it. i don't have any mouthpieces in my country except a few brands i don't like and it's pretty scary to buy a mouhtpiece without trying it first, especially when it's so expensive.
which model from the morgan bass clarinet mouthpieces would you say is best?
only information i can give to help you help me, is that i have a vandoren B45 and i don't like it. i also have a pomarico crystal #1 (tip 1.60) which is too closed.
morgan has these models: C - tip 1.68 D - tip 1.86 E - tip 2.00
i think the D model is best but i'd like to hear from some with experience.
my second wuesion is about Bb calrinet barrels. i have a big weather problem here so 3 barrels i have are already cracked. i have a reglar barrel fo a R-13, a barrel for R-13 prestige that says B 66, a chadash that says B 66, and a new one from switzerland that says FES B 66. anyone knows what that FES B 66 means? my friend got it for me there and he doesn't know anything about clarinets, but he asked what i told him to ask which is a barrel for a buffet prestige R-13 Bb clarinet.
thanks alot to anyone what helps.

For the bass mouthpieces, try contacting one of the sponsors of this site who make bass mouthpieces (Clark Fobes, Walter Grabner, etc) and talk to them about sending you some on trial.
I think the barrel you mention is probably for the Festival model Buffet.
Good Luck

Clarnibass.
What country do you live in, not that this is a big deal, but it's a starting point. As to the barrells cracking, I'm guessing you live in a dryer climate with large temperature changes. I live here in Colorado, so I know about those problems. The main thing i would have to say about teh cracking in this future si to keep orange peels, or something else similar, Grapefruit or any other similar citrus fruit peels in your case. This will help keep humidity under controll and keep the barrels from cracking, hopefully. At least it wil help limit the amount to which the barrell will crack.
Secondly about the mouthpiece. I'm wondering what type of bass clarinet you have. First off, is it a Boehm or German/Oehler system.
I don't know what you have already, but here are some suggestions. The mouthpiece I use on my bass, Buffet Prestige Low C, is a Stock, out fo the box Selmer C*. I use it for all my orchestra gigs, from a local symphony to the Colorado Symphony. It get's a great tone, has evenness throughout the registers and plays fairly nicely. I also have a Bill Street number 4. However I can't play it. It just dosen't work for me. Grabner makes good mouthpieces, but you just have to talk to these people and see what they can do for you. Meaning a trial period, etc. Most will be hapy to work with you.

i live in israel, in a part that is a really dry. i also have a buffet prestige low C just like yours. the thing is i can't try the mouthpieces before i buy them. i also had people recommending me on vandoren mouthpieces which in my opinion are pretty bad. if i won't get a morgan i will get a pomarico that is more open.
also i couldn't find buffet festival model anywhere. can i get a link to it or something please? how much does it cost?
thank you.

I know that the bass clarinetist of the Israel Philharmonic used a crystal mouthpiece, at least in video that I have seen. I don't know that name of the person, but they were female, and from probablly about 10 years agao.
I can see why some people are reluctant to send you something for trial, living half way around the world and all, espically in these plitically unstable times. However I agree about the vandoren mouthpieces. I have tried a couple, B45 and B30, and the only one that sort of worked well was the B30. Not to say that they are bad, they just don't work for me. The Selmer C* has given me good results and is relativly cheap, USD$100.
I would go with the more open mouthpieces, with the correct reeds they get a more full osund, espically on the Buffet's, as well as the Selmer bass clarinets.
I would possibly even look for a mouthpiece from a maker in Wurope, somewhere closer to Israel, maybe they'd be more willing to loan something out for trial. Good luck, if anything give the bass clarinetist of the Philharmonic a call, I'm sure they'd be glad to be of help, or at least reccomend something.
