I was doing a little research on Benny Goodman. As I was reading through the chapters, I was curious about Benny's nickname. He was called as "The Ray". But, I didn't understand it well of why he was given such a nickname, which he didn't expect. I think when I was reading the book the "Ray" meant "Are you better or could you do it right?" Comments or questions anyone?

Although Benny's musicians probably called him more colorful nicknames behind his back, "The Ray" referred to the disapproving stare/glare Goodman would give to any musician whom he felt did not meet his demanding standards. Once Goodman gave you "The Ray", you probably should start thinking of playing with a different band.
As an ironic tribute, one of the Benny Goodman fan clubs calls their newsletter "The Ray" ...GBK
