Hey there after playing both pieces i find that i love Concertino much more due to its musical variance. I think also that the Grand Duo is no match for the concertino but i have heard good things a about it personally i dont like it all that much but Im curious if im missing something so if neone wants to chime in on there experiences with Concertant i wuld love to hear them thanx

Don't forget that the key word in the title of the Grand Duo Concertant is duo.

Weber wrote this work to show, aside from Baermann's virtuosity, his own impressive keyboard skills. This is a major chamber music work for clarinet - but it is still chamber music. Without the piano you are only getting half of the piece.

The Concertino, written 5 years before the Grand Duo, is a showpiece for clarinet with orchestral accompaniment. It was such a success on first hearing that the King of Bavaria immediately ordered 2 more full scale clarinet works (which would be the concerti in F minor and Eb major.)

Both works show the operatic side of Weber and should be played in a singing, lyrical style.

Enjoy each work in the venue it was composed for. Trying to say which one is "better" is too simplistic a way of viewing the pieces...GBK

I personally like the Grand Duo better (but that's why they make chocolate and vanilla). As GBK said, it's hard to compare them because they are so different. The Grand Duo is certainly more difficult (though this doesn't make it better). Is there anything in particular that you dislike about the grand duo (specifics always help), or do you just like the Concertino better? (you mentioned musical variance... the Concertino is sorta a theme and variation... is that what you meant, or are you referring to emotional contrasts in the piece?)

Hope I can help,

Don -theclarinetist@yahoo.com
