I dont know.... would like to, I double as a dbl reed player (oboe)....have heard the english horn and really like the sound...but not with in my price range yet..

'Cuz a lot of woodwind players double on a multitude of other instruments as well, even some brass. Although my brass playing is best used for scaring away evil spirits. It works! My snooty neighbors keep their distance now.

An English horn is pitched a fifth lower so it should be just over half again as long as an oboe. That would put it at roughly 39 inches. This is *not* an exact figure but just an estimate. A bass oboe would be approximately twice as long as a regular oboe, which would put it somewhere around 52 inches. Again this is *not* an exact figure.

My semi-antique, German-made, E H [key of F] without reed measures 31 1/2 inches and I believe it to be the same length as the French {Loree-clone} I played in our Symphony years on back. Between it and the oboe is the oboe-d'amore [key of A], a somewhat of a rarity, which is probably about 26 1/2in. as my oboes are about 21 1/2. As with clarinets, tube length is somewhat related to bore size [likely at the minimum diameter]. The next larger "oboe" I believe is known, at least in Ger., as the Heckelphone and could be called a bass [to correspond to the vocal "ranges" of sop. alto tenor bass [SATB]]. The true bass [and contra-bass] of the double reed family are the bassoons. If playable, you can check out pitch via piano, or Bb clar. Welcome to a second family!! Don
