 wheezy bass in high register
Author: ron b

I just came back from trying Search - got message 'it's not ready yet'. So, yes, I tried to do a Search first :(

I'm trying to try out a Yamaha. My good "Ol' Reliable" Bundy is working fine but if I can get this one to play right I may consider the 'upgrade' factor. The Yamaha plays very well in lower register, easy blowin' - nice sound, but anything above (top line) F-F# is very 'stuffy'; acts/feels like a leak up there. I don't find anything obvious with a leak light so this has got me a bit puzzled. Maybe something's not Opening right. I'd like to get it to play right to really try it out but, the way it is, I can't give it a fair trial.

Ah ... try the "Search" link right on the BBoard itself!

yes my colleague has the same problem, only on a bundy bass.
the same problem applies on the lower register too.....
assuming that its not the condition of the instrument,
i would like to know why does he complain that saliva leaks are frequent over the sides of the reed, can someone explain why and what are the ways to correct or improve the embouchure (if it is related, if not explain
anyway...hehe =) )

Ron - As I've prob said before, my experience with quite a few basses taught me that the best all-around bass has the "double register keying" system. and thereby was the more expensive horn whether Selmer, Buffet or Yamaha etc, partic. as to the lower clarion notes. I play mainly in the chalameau, throat and some clarion using soft reeds on an "open" [glass] mp with clear tones, so, keep trying different combos. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

These horns don't have the luxury of a double register key. The Yamaha plays well in the lower register but anything above top line F gets quite murky and has a marked tendency to squeak. I can find no obvious pad leaks. The mouthpiece/reed setup is fine with the Bundy. Since the Bundy seems like a fine horn anyway, at least for me, maybe I don't *need* an upgrade after all. The grass isn't always greener over there :)

The double register key is probably the real issue here. I have a Yamaha 221 bass, and it's just as stuffy as you describe in that range. Unless your upgrade includes dual register vents, I don't think you're going to make much progress.

I really don't believe any horn should behave like this, Allen. I mean, it's really out of whack and I can't find anything (obviously) wrong. I haven't worked on bass clarinets before so maybe this is my golden opportunity to play detective and find the root of the problem. I found a disconnected spring but that wasn't it. I've pretty much decided I don't want the instrument - but I'd sure like to know why it's so contrary. The old Bundy chugs right along, notwithstanding its single register key.
I'll let you know what I discover. Maybe the info can improve your instrument's performance :)

Ron- I'm sure you have cleaned and inspected the register vent tube [for any internal bending] and experimented with differing "pad-rises" , but feel those points should be mentioned, even to a DD [diligent detective]. I have sold my only SRK bass, a Malerne-made?? Linton, it was a bit "fuzzy" but tolerable, so cant experiment to help. Ask Dave S, his experience is beyond mine! I did play a well-restored/adjusted LeBlanc [best] bass, SRK, at Wichita Band, Quite good, my Selmer DRK is better, tho. Don

Thanks, Don, for those good suggestions. I checked the points you mentioned but they're good reminders and worth re-checking. I'm all for honing DD skills so I'm going to set aside an hour or so later today just to go step-by-step over all the possibilities I can think of. I feel this is something other than a simple pad leak. I also have a sneaky suspicion that it's going to be something rather simple that I'm simply overlooking.
(Simple Simon, met a pie man... :)
Oh, boy - time to brew up another pot of coffee...
