i know for the clarinet ligature the preasure plates are supposed to stretch across the entire reed but i just recieved an optimum ligature for my alto saxophone and the plates dont stretch across the entire reed. is this supposed to happen or was i shipped the wrong one?(it fits on my mouthpiece, its gold plated, and the box says its what its supposed to be) if it matters im using vandoren java 2.5

Hmmm.....maybe you did get a wrong part. I use an Optimum on my bass clarinet and the pressure plate option seems to be right for that reed.
However, for the record, I preffer the parallel rail insert over the other two. It lends more resonance to the sound, similar to that of the Bonade original. In fact, everyone I know who is using the Optimum seems to opt for the PR as well.

I have always felt the Vandoren Optimum to be a technical monstrosity which is poorly designed,
I know some players get fine results with..
they tend not to fit all mouthpieces very well, and the small parts can easily get lost.
