Hello
I've been an on and off clarinet player for about 10 years, mostly simple jazz and classical stuff.
I'm trying to do something new with the instruments sound and now that I've become proficient in some music composition software, all I need is music.
Any suggestions for a good book of music that I can easily pull simple hook loops from?
Thanks
Brian

Yo!--bro--go slow, you betta hush
While I'm strokin' back and forth with my dutch rush!
Vandoren is borin'--my homies they be snorin'
Took an Uzi to my Boosey--shoulda been a bit more choosy
Got my beat from the street, but I gotta sound sweet
So I called the mother****** with the symphony seat
He's bankin' my Franklin and talkin' kind of dour,
Said 'We'll have to solve your problem in the next half hour'
Horn sez "Pull me out and show me, then blow me for the homey"
Homey sez "whack!, out the window you should throw me!"
"That liquorice stick is soundin' kinda queer
Aintcha kinda old for a Hite Premier?"
I bugged, and Homey said "Now don't get shook up!"
Four Bens'll score a Pyne and I got the hookup."
If you're no squealer, I'm your dealer and like no other,
I can fix my homey up with this asymmetrical mother.
So I broke down my wood and went back to the hood
Homeys grabbed my Woody Allen a** and beat me up good.
I still lay down the groove, but I'm much the wiser.
Told the homeys it's all comin' from a synthesizer!

Allen Cole spouts the lingo of the street.
I caught his verse and felt the beat.
His rhymes are cool,
It ain't Sunday school.
Even rappers want a ringside seat... GBK

Let me get this straight. You want us to suggest pieces of music, or snippets, for you to steal and incorporate in an alleged composition. I think you will find that nobody here approves of plagiarism or just plain theft. Get your own ideas not somebody elses. Dj's and computer faux composers that steal other peoples ideas and then re-hash them are just thieves and have no legitimacy artistic or otherwise.

If you really want to do this hip-hop thing, why not just set up some house music and play along to it. You can generate some starter house music from one of those Casio or Yamaha consumer keyboards with the built-in rhythms and 1-finger chords. Just set up a groove, select string section for your voice, and make misty-sounding chords.
Not unlike the guys on Saturday Night Live, or the little rock band in "Welcome To the Dollhouse."

Yo !
Thanks, Allen, that's pretty much the direction I was going in, I just dont know my key changes and blues scales too well. [ Deleted]
Hey Mark, thanks for the great post.... I bet it felt good to get out that pent up hostilty on a stranger. I enjoy such embarassing vitriol, such as your crude message, which puts down a whole music genre. Simple mind.

Those keyboards are surprisingly friendly in this area. In fact, the Yamaha keyboards will adjust their rhythm section to a custom chord that you finger yourself--holding down the keys while the computer interprets. Just experiment a bit. If you're setting up a hip-hop thing, you don't have to be a chord expert. Go for groove tunes at first, with only a few chord changes. A James Brown kind of vehicle should help you get your feet wet. Get braver with chords as you get to know them.
I went to a flute clinic a few years ago, where a guy used house music to teach concepts of improvising and he produced some pretty good results with no prior knowledge on the part of the students. With the right beat, he made quite a bit just by shuttling between parallel major and minor chords.
As for the scales and stuff, learn all your majors and extract your major pentatonics. That'll at least give you a point of reference.

It's bad enough when P-Diddy and Celine Dion rip off originals.
We're not putting down a musical genre, at all.

I can't see that Mark was putting down a whole music genre. Unless the whole genre is based on plagiarism.
I will take my shot though.
Isn't it nice that there is a place in music for the un-musical!
