Hi all.
I find that when I play in an air conditioned room, my tone sounds cold and thin, compared with the rounder, warm sound when playing outdoors. Is it got to do with my reed? Maybe I need a softer reed. I play a vandoren V12 3.5 on my 5RV.

i've never ran into this problem. how cold is the room? that could be the problem, try turning your airconditioner on low just to take the humidity out of the room and you should be fine.
if the room is freezing cold it could be that your clarinet is cold and not the reed. on the vandoren site (www.vandoren.com) it says that a 3.5 V12 reed is recommended for the 5RV.

IMO this is a question for a physicist, but....perhaps the change in sound quality from a/c indoor air to outdoor air is related to the way sound travels when the characteristics of the medium are altered; e.g., warmer air can carry more moisture which, in turn, affects sound quality?
Also, the acoustics are bound to differ between any room and outdoors.

The air is circulating. IMHO this is the real factor, not that the air has been cooled and de-humidified. The air is still warmer and more humid than in the winter. We've all heard what happens to a clarinet sound when you play in the path of a fan.
