 Benny Carter dead at 95
Author: JMcAulay

Off topic? I don't think so.

Yesterday, the world of Jazz lost one of its long-time leading lights with the passing of Benny Carter. Carter's musical talents extended across the board: instrumentalist, leader, composer, teacher -- and arranger of everything from movie scores to charts for many groups, including Benny Goodman and the BBC Dance Orchestra.

Born in 1907, Carter won a Lifetime Achiement Grammy in 1987. Another of his Grammys was awarded for a knockout sax solo on a 1994 recording of the old Ellington song "Prelude to a Kiss." And, kiddies, he was 86 at the time.

Anyone contemplating a career in music should learn more about Carter, A good start is http://www.bennycarter.com.

Regards,
John

One of the greats on alto sax, and a fine player on trumpet and clarinet as well. Many of the great saxmen, including Cannonball Adderley and Ben Webster considered him an important influence.

He was also remarkably creative well into his old age.

Benny was one of the best of the Best!
He will be missed.
His phenomenal career spanned almost a century of Jazz, and he was one of the most creative, and modest.
Meeting and hearing him play, once in Detroit, many years ago, left an indelible impression in a young sax student...thanks Benny.
You really will be missed!

TKS, John, YES to the above, one of our creative best. I believe he was featured a bit in the PBS Jazz series, perhaps Burns will produce a special, at least on jazz saxophonists! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Benny Carter was not only a living legend but also a prolific one. He gave us all countless hours of joy and inspiration and will live on gloriously through recordings. And may I add, it's so very gratifying to enjoy having some of the "great ones" remain with us for full life and career and not be snatched away early in life by accident, violence or drug abuse.

Let us also not forget Herbie Mann who we lost here last week...another long-time industry jazz/pop fusion pillar of excellence. v/r Ken

Not too long ago, someone on a jazz board I frequent had lunch with Benny Carter and related some of his visit . . . If I can find it, I'll link to it here.

So sad that we are losing so many of the jazz greats.
