 Franz Joseph Haydn Clarinet Concertos
Author: theclarinetist

Hello. On www.amazon.com, they list a cd of Clarinet Concertos by F.J. Haydn. To my knowledge (limited as it is), I didn't think he had written any concertos for clarinet (and this was confirmed by the "compositions database"). The page on amazon does not indicate if these have been transposed from an original instrument, so i'm a little bit confused...

Here are the works listed:
1.Clarinet Concerto in Bb M (spurious)
2.Concerto for 2 clarinets/orchestra in Eb M (spurious)
3.Concerto for 2 clarinets/orchestra in Bb M (spurious)

here is the link to the page:

Anybody who has any idea about these pieces, please let me know!

Thanks

These are Dieter Klocker "specials" - he claims to have found new manuscripts but he never allows any peer review. That's why they're labelled "spurious" - the attribution to Haydn is "iffy" - without peer review of the manuscripts we only have Klocker's word for it, and the word of some scholars is that these pieces are not by Haydn.

So if the concertos aren't by Haydn, then they are obviously not any good, right?! :-)

Truth in advertising would be nice.

If the pieces were attributed to "composer X" (Klocker or otherwise) would they have no chance of being heard? Does this mean that there are no good unattributed pieces from the past 300 yeares to be discovered? Is this like the canon of Scripture - the book is closed and sealed and there shall be no more sweet communication from the past?

Bottom line question, truth in advertising aside: Are these pieces any good? Do they mimic Haydn? Are they worth listening to?

I'm with Jerry....

Haydn or not (though it would be nice to know for sure!), are these pieces any good? Are they worth buying, even with their controversial origins? Heehee. Just wondering!

Haydn's writting for the clarinet was either banal (think London Symphonies) or extremely beautiful (think Creation/Seasons). My two cents worth.

Weren't the Haydn Clarinet Concerto manuscripts found along with the long lost Mozart Tenor Sax Concerto? ...GBK

as cute as we are being (and we are!)... if scholars believe they aren't Haydn, any ideas of where they might have come from?

1) The pieces Klocker played are OK, not up to what I believe are Haydn standards.

2) Since Klocker won't let anyone see the manuscripts, the Haydn scholars couldn't be bothered to care one way or another.

Hi everyone, it's 10 years later.
Is there any new information about the "Haydn" concerto? Has it been disproven (or proven) since? Did anyone acces the manuscripts?
