I have heard that there is a live recording from 1941 with McLean (sp?) playing the Beethoven Septet and the Shubert Octet with members of the Budapest String Quartet, does anyone know whether this has been released to CD?
I was also told that the Library of Congress has (or did have) this recording on file, but when I tried searching for it on their web site I could not find it.
What, if any, are the best recordings/examples of his playing currently available? I have heard a recording of him playing the Brahms Trio, but the recording quality is so poor it is hard to determine much.

Ralph McLane performed the Beethoven Septet and the Schubert Octet at the Library of Congress on 15 May 1947. Other participants were members of the Budapest Quartet, James Chambers (horn), Elias Carmen (bassoon), and Anton Torello (double bass).
Several years ago when the Coolidge Auditorium at the LOC was being refurbished PBS radio rebroadcast some past performances in the LOC archives including these McLane performances. The McLane performances have never been released commercially.
Some of the Philadelphia Orchestra recordings made when McLane was principal clarinet have been reissued on CD. The Miaskovsky Symphony No. 21 is outstanding. Two other CD's are the Piatigorsky 1946 recording of the Dvorak Cello Concerto and Isaac Stern's 1949 recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Alexander Hilsberg conducting. Some of the old LP's can still be bought from dealers on the Internet. McLane's 1946 recording of the Pines of Rome issued on Columbia ML 4020 is a gem worth finding.
