What different majors and careers are their in music?
I know there's performance and composition and things like that. But I was wondering, what do you all do? And what are the pros and cons of the different ways music is a part of our lives?

A career that is often overlooked is music therapy, and (ala Groucho) by the sounds of your jokes, you could use some. Just kidding, morning humor....
Seriously, music therapy in the medical, psychological and educational settings is often a most effective means to raise the spirits, promote a positive and healing attitude among seriously ill patients, and to focus the attention of many emotionally challenged students to enable a more productive learning experiance in school. As a teacher, I have seen how even the most un disciplined student reacts to a structured music therapy program. Also, as a musician, I have experianced old eyes (and ears) lighting up during our Retro Swing Band programs at local nursing homes and nutritional centers for the aged.
Music therapy is one music profession that needs more exploration and consideration by the medical science and pulbic school communities.

I did a performance diploma and then a degree in music education with a dual performance major. I am currently doing a post grad thesis in music history. I decided after a number of attempts at classroom music teaching that I didn't want to follow that path so I went and learned the repair trade instead. I have remained a performer and play professionally on sax, bassoon and clarinet. This is the toughest road by far and if you persist you will see many fall by the wayside if you dont yourself. I still do a limited amount of instrumental teaching, trying to stick strictly to saxophone, but only one on one. Group lessons are a total waste of time. Repairing, woodwind and brass, provides a substantial part of my income but this happened after many years experience and accumulation of tools and equipment. It is not a glamorous life however being up to your neck in school band instruments day after day. I think the saying is "making a silk purse out of a sows ear". I try to do only specialist repair work on saxophones and bassoons but general repairs keep the cash flow going. For every full overhaul/ restoration on a saxophone there are at least 50 small school repairs to do. Because of my playing expertise I often do instrument voicings sax, clarinet and flute but again the school repairs pay the rent. As I approach completion of my post grad degree I am starting to re-evaluate things. My chosen carreer path is still music and always will be
as it is the only true passion I have. I agree that music therapy is an interesting new field which I gave some careful consideration to a few years back.

i too am looking into a career in music and am undecided on ways to go. there are a few possibilities which i must consider though....
Performance: a very hard road. you have to be a top of the line player to succeed here.
Free lance musician: hahahahahaha
Education: might be cool, but many schools are considering dropping arts programs.
Repair: not a bad career but theres a lot of hands on work
Therapy: a new possibility, i have to look in to it personally
these are just a few common careers musicians take, there are many more out there.

I fully endorse music therapy. (I attend a college that has one of the nation's best therapy programs) However, I am always thinking of musical aspects to more "professional" careers. If you've a mind for business, there's a career within the music industry. I personally am contemplating going to law school after I finish my BA in music. I figure who better to work on copyrights, plagarism, artists' rights, etc. cases then one who knows music intimately? Good luck with whatever path you choose.
