Urinetown, The Musical is currently being performed in our town (San Francisco) and gearing up for a national tour, so it may be coming to your town (or one nearby) soon. My recommendation: If it's anywhere near you, GO SEE IT!
The outrageous premise sets the stage (so to speak) for a laugh-filled show that is (especially in the dance numbers) a parody of/affectionate tribute to classic stage and movie musicals (for example, Singing In The Rain, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof). You don't have to be familiar with those musicals to enjoy this one; it just adds an extra layer of enjoyment.
The five-piece "Urinetown Band" was placed on the (audience) left side of the stage, in a cage-like area. If it's done the same way on tour, try to get seats near the center or on the right side so you can see the players.
There was one woodwind part in the score: clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, soprano sax. Lots of fun music in various styles.
In the spirit of Urinetown, The Musical: You've gotta go!

I can see the reviews.
"The No. 1 musical of the year!" -- Playbill
"Weeee! What fun!" -- Theater Review
"A whiz of a show!" -- Off-Broadway Weekly
I'm terribly sorry for those. Anybody have more?

Paul Garment is the woodwind player here in NYC at "Urinetown," and as a good friend, he's had me in to do his chair at the show many times.
Its a ball...a must see! I've had fun playing there, and the cast is great.
Support live music, go see a show!

Sounds like the mentality and maturity of junior high from days of yore has bubbled up in the "arts." I'm sure San Francisco will love it!

Liquorice --
Yes, it's really called that.
Jerry --
I was a little leery of that myself, not knowing anything about the musical beforehand. However, it is not at all puerile or sophomoric (or scatological), just a lot of silly fun a la A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. And, yes, it appears San Francisco does love it. Of course, we have and like some of the puerile things, too. For example, Jay Leno's line: "Urinetown. Isn't that a remake of The Wiz?"

I saw the play with my friend the proctologist. He's actually number 1 in the number 2 business.

I'm sure the audience pisses themselves laughing.
I didn't realise musical theatre had reached this level.

I'll bet when the show's over there isn't a "dry seat in the house"...o.k. back to my corner.
