how much better is an E11 than an R13 buffet clarinet? i currently own an E11 and am curious about how good an R13 is because its one of the standard pro clarinets.

well first off in my limited knowlege of clarinets an R13 is better than an E11 the E11 is Buffet's student to intermediate model wooden clarinet. An R13 is Buffet's professional model in between the two are the E12 and E13 which are respectively slightly better than the one before it. The R13 i believe is made in France where as the E11 is made in Germany. Someone pleaz feel free to correct me if im wrong but the R13 is supposed to have better quality wood and is supposed to cosmetically look better, and mechanically plays better.

Here is my opinion (though I can only speak for my r-13 and the few e-11s I've played on). My R-13 has a prettier sound, the key work "feels better" under my hands (maybe this is just my opinion... but the E-11 key work feels cheaper). The r-13 also just tends to be easier to play and control the musical aspects of your playing. Just what I've experienced...

PS - as I said, I can't speak for all R-13s/E-11s... just the ones I've tried. In fact, I've played on a few r-13s that made E-11s look pretty good = ) It obviously differs from instrument to instrument.

I agree with the clarinetist above. It's all in the feel and sound of the instrument. I have an old E-13. When I playtested other instruments with the hope of finding something new and better, I noticed that ALL the R-13's I tried seemed to sound much worse than my E-13. It could have been quite a few things. Since they are mass produced, there's going to be much variation inbetween them and maybe I just happened to test a bunch of "bad" ones. It could be that they needed a few adjustments in order to keep up with mine. Also, it could be that I was just SO accustomed to my clarinet that I unconsciously lipped notes the same as my E-13 which might have produced those out of tune notes I thought I heard. Also, the ease of blowing is much different (the R-13 is more resistent than the E-13 and also the E-11. I preferred an easy blowing instrument.)
So I'm sticking with my E-13. Not only cause I can't afford to buy an R-13, but when I think about it hard enough and long enough, it suits my purposes. It sounds great, plays well, and, after a little more fine tuning and customizing, will hopefully maintain me throughout my community band life.
