New Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic Reeds
Author: PJ
Date:   2003-07-01 00:43

Okay, I've searched all over this BB and no one's talked about it yet (that I could find). Has anyone heard anything about the new Vandoren reed called "56 Rue Lepic?" I know it is named for the address of the factory, but their website shows no information on it yet. Anyone have any words to share on them? Phil Muncy is taking orders for them now, but that was all I could find.

Thanks in advance to all who reply,

PJ

A friend told me he heard about them at the Vandoren shop in NYC. I have heard they will be released shortly.

A Hamburger by any other name....costs twice as much.
Looks like Benz is going after BMW again. Or is it Chevy vs Ford?

I saw this brand mentioned on a "coming soon" adv. on a reed supplier's website.

I reckon they couldnt call them "Vandoren FOF" or Vandoren "Grand Select"
for copyright reasons

Didja ever notice the description of +every+ brand of reed on the suppliers adv reads "the choice of professionals worldwide....carefully selected...the best cane...the most precise cut..."yada yada.

I think I will wait for Chateau Petrus reeds to be released.

Now who really didn't see this coming?

With the meteoric rise of Gonzalez, Mozart, Zonda, Grand Concert, etc... combined with the very vocal world-wide carping about the recent quality of Vandoren reeds, this is strictly a move to rejuvenate their share of the market place.

These questions must now be asked: With the most premium of reeds cherry-picked and sorted into the "hand selected" category, and the thicker, more scarce blanks being turned into V12 reeds, where is this new (assumedly) higher grade of cane coming from? Or are these new reeds going to be made with the aforementioned grade of cane, and all other Vandoren reed models dropped down a degree in quality? Will the V12 and Blue Box reeds even be less consistant? Already we are seeing cane which is now being used that would never have been thought to be marketable a mere 5 years ago.

Extra marketing hype, new publicity ads, new cutting machines, new production methods, new packaging = in my opinion, more cost passed on to the consumer for essentially the same product... GBK (always a skeptic)

Advanced orders on reeds? You have got to be kidding. They are just reeds for Pete's sake. It wasn't that long ago that people made their own.

new clarinet reed

name is the only information that I have. The reeds are called 56 rue
Lepic.

(Disclaimer - I sell Gonzalez Reeds) Nice to see that there is more competition in the marketplace and more (potential ??) good choices of reeds for players. There is only so much that hype can bring to sales and market share. Like most consumers who are price and quality conscious we need no longer accept boxes of reeds that give us 1, 2 or even 5 good reeds out of a box. It ultimately boils down to the quality of the cane, the cut, and the consistency of strength grading within a box. If there are other qualities I would sure like to know? Giving your address is only good news if the reeds are great in playability and price - otherwise you generate a lot of hate mail.

Hi all,
GBK is correct, a move by Vandoren to re-claim market share was due. In my opinion, a little late, maybe too late. My daughter uses Gonzalez FOF that I purchase exclusively from The Doctor. (The included "Vitamin M" works wonders. My daughter keeps it in her case.)
The point is, in order for Vandoren to make a comeback they have to come out with a reed that blows everything else away, or at the very least as good as the best reeds out there. Of course that would put them head to head with Gonzalez. Figure the odds. I for one wouldn't even consider trying them until they have a proven track record (maybe by the end of the decade). Vandoren in my opinion helped create its own competition. By (in my opinion) ignoring its customers it opened the market for new reed manufacturers. Bravo!!!

Best Regards
Mark

Honestly, I make my own reeds. I was only interested in additional information on what is supposed to be different about the new Vandies. If anyone could be so kind as to post this information as they see it, I would greatly appreciate it and I will try to do the same.

Sarcasm is sometimes funny, but not always informative.

Thx,

PJ

I don't like to use Vandoren reeds any more because of the change in tip shape. I feel that the tip of the reed should match my mouthpieces and the Vandorens don't.

I confess I didn't really test the new tip shape much to determine if there was a playability issue. I was just peeved that they made that change. At the same time I discovered FOFs and Grand Concerts and Glotins, so I had no problems saying adios to Vandoren.

Does anyone else think there is a problem with playing Vandorens on non-Vandoren mouthpieces?

Do you suppose the new reed will have a shape like a Vandoren mouthpiece or will it fit the others?

Yeah, I got sucked into the hype for the new Rue Lepic reeds.

The cane is inferior to the regular Blue Box reeds. It is pulpy, less dense and straw-like. The cut does not have as much "heart" and the vibration lacks the "ring" or the wormth of the standard Vandorens.

I have great success with 3 and 3.5 standard Vandorens on a Pyne Signature mouthpiece with a Brancher Opera ligature (a solid silver one, not the newer silver plated brass ones which do not perform as well).

My review of the Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic reeds said essentially the same thing:

http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=121293&t=121293

I have played with many professional freelance clarinetists over the past year and have tried to make note of their preferred reed choice. Most are either playing (in descending order) Vandoren V12's, Gonzalez FOF, Grand Concerts, or Zonda. I have yet to find anyone using the Vandoren 56.

Strictly unscientific, but perhaps interesting ...GBK

I use Rue Le Pic, well... one so far. I have a box right now. (I'm thinking of selling it). I admit, great out of the box, unlike V12s. lol

Yeah they play great, but they also turn fluffy fairly quick.

The end kinda tapers at the end. It's not french cut like regular VDs... umm... it costs $30 a box, and they are made in small quantities right now. They come in a humidity sealed package, in a cool black box.

They're ok. No biggy tho. Most ppl that tried them in my school think the same.
