 doubling on the trumpet
Author: TomJ

Hi,
I've recently dabbling with the trumpet, but I'm worried it might effect my clarinet embouchure and my saxophone embouchure. I have been playing clarinet for about 10 years.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
I think this has been discussed before, and as I recall, the general consensus was that playing trumpet would not harm clarinet/sax embouchure.
This issue reminds me think of my high school music teacher, who was an extremely talented professional musician and big band leader. His primary instrument was the alto sax, but he could play all the brass instruments (and piano, violin, etc.) very competently too. It certainly didn't damage his embouchure.
Enjoy your reedless, ligatureless instrument which will never crack, need its bore oiled, or need new pads.
Hans

I have "doubled" on trumpet all my life and it has never been detremental to my woodwind embouchure--as long as I faithfully maintain a regular practice schedule on clarinet. As a school band director of 34 yrs, whenever I needed to demostrate difficult passages to my ensembles, I would use the trumpet (no reed, just pick up and play). My main instrument is classical clarinet, but also play the saxophones and flute as well. One good thing about playing the trumpet is that you don't have to sit in front of them. And it is lots of fun--and will strengthen you woodwind chops. So enjoy.......
