Couldn't connect through the links above but a quick stroll down Webwalk this afternoon revealed some interesting sights at the sites. You can latch onto an L.A.Sax contrabass for a mere $39,000.00 - - this week
No 'sticker-shock', but that salesperson giving me the eye got me to movin' right along. I didn't stick around long enough to find the price tag on the supersubcontra.
There was a very interesting afternoon program on (west coast) Public Radio (jazz station) yesterday interviewing a bass sax player. Lots of ensemble and demo pieces with commentay and anecdotes - then some nice Whitman/Bix numbers. Evening broadcast had a whole hour featuring bass sax. A point that caught my attention was that he used a baritone mouthpiece (not the original bass mpc) to get better tone/timbre control.
Did you happen to catch that broadcast, CBsax?

There was a Tubax for sale at a retailer in the US a while back. It was supposed to be a bass ie. Bb only. The tubax is a saxophone with a double curl, in a similar manner to a tuba, which brings the height down. One of the reasons that bass and bigger saxophones only have keys to high Eb is to improve visibilty. With the tubax concept keys to high F or F# can be fitted. Instead of having the tubing sticking up above your head, with a tubax everything is below eye line. I don't think that they will catch on in a big way.

BTW, Adrian Rollini used a bari mpc w/ a cut-down bass reed to get his famous sound. Sounds like the guy you mentioned is going for the same effect.

I don't know if there was or will be a re-broadcast. I have part of the evening Riverwalk broadcast with a short interview of (Jake?) Giordano (I think). He, or his brother - not sure just now - bought the bass sax from Adrian Rolini. I'll be happy to send you a copy of what I have on tape. Contact me off-line.

Thats a regular contra bass if im right. Email Jay and ask him to be sure. But if it is a regular contrabass than they make bigger ones which are curved generallly called paperclip contrabass clarinets. which instead of playing to low Eb play to low C. But there have been made Octo contraalto and octocontrabass clarinets which are even bigger yet. Go to the sight with the picture of the sub contrabass sax and locate and click on galerys and sound clips. click on clarinet family album and locate the compleate clarinet family portrate. The two biggest clarinets are the octocontraalto and octocontrabass clarinets. THe third and fourth biggest are the contra bass and contra alto clarinets. Hope this helps.

You can find Normal contrabass and paperclip contrabass clairnets at www.wwbw.com. The prices are around $6000 and $9000 i believe. They will tell you on their website.

I just found out that this instrument is used with a bari sax mouthpeice. Weird. Who else thinks that an instrument that playes so low shouldn't have such a small mouthpeice.

The small mpc probably offers more control, as previously mentioned in regards to the bass sax.
(BTW, I saw Vince Giordano live about a week ago and [briefly] met him . . . What an amazing musician!!)

ive seen these things online and all but i think they sounds like garbage. all the notes sound the same bc they are so low. i wouldnt want to have one in any band of mine.
