There is an interesting article, entitled "How to Kill Orchestras", in today's NY Times. The URL is:
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/29/arts/television/29HOLL.html?pagewanted=1&th
Anyone considering a career as a musician should read this.

I believe Holland makes some valid points, but please remember, he's a critic and sells articles for a living. Many of us out here play music for a living, and work with thriving symphony orchestras. Trust what musicians say about their own profession, and don't be discouraged by a critic or two, if you're planning a career in a most wonderful profession, it will not be easy, but there will be a profession in music always.
It's easy to criticize, and look for the "demise" of an art form. Becoming a great player, and maintaining a positive attitude is very difficult.
I suggest you go for the positive attitude.

John J. Moses.
What a decent human being you are.
Hey, you can say the same thing about the New York Times these days.
As a former New York journalist (the Herald Tribune), I don't think the Times is in a position to criticize anything.

Thanks Hans
Isn’t the same thing happening in other fields like Medicine and Education with their cost-effective professional administrators? It is frustrating but if it’s ‘in your blood’ whether it be medicine, teaching or even music, I see the situation as a challenge and not a discouragement. Should we deny what’s happening or should we ‘know our enemies’, adjust, and continue on?

I can't get into the NY Times site --- who is the critic, is it Bill Holland? The same who used to have an excellent band of his own in the DC area? Just wondering.

Actually I think Frank Rich has brought some improvements to the Times' reporting on the arts. He has been a solid asset to them, which they have desperately needed.
