Selmer Signature or Buffet R-13?

Which one should I buy? The price difference is not a problem, so give me your honest opinion about which is better.

I just purchased a Signature this summer. I compared it directly with a new Buffet and found it to be 100 times better for me. Also, a few days ago I had to take my Signature to the shop because the weather made the wood expand and one of the keys needed to be adjusted. (I wouldn't of had this done but I had All-State auditions and wanted my instrument to be in top condition.) The day my Signature was in the shop I had to play my older Buffet and felt I sounded terrible on the Buffet. But as always, the R-13 might work better for you. My best advice is to try both side-by-side. Good luck and have fun!

As anonymous said - buy what works for you, as long as it's reasonably in tune. Don't take our advice for things like professional level clarinets, other than (possibly) what to avoid :^)

The "pro level" (what I call clarinets that start at around $1800 or so street price) are there for a reason - each has strengths and weaknesses. As long as you're aware of the differences, and you don't believe the "marketing hype" that the manufacturers put out, you'll be fine. It would be good to get a trusted teacher involved who can evaluate your sound from a listeners perspective - the clarinet does not sound the same to listeners as it does to you.

Leblanc Concerto, Opus or LL. Don't even bother with this buffet garbage.

Of course you will buy your favorite one. But there are definite differences. Siganature is far better than R-13 at least in intonation. Tone holes without rings are raised to match those with rings. Left hand A-flat key is added. See Selmer's HP. http://www.selmer.com/
I have been waiting two years for them to sell 442Hz model in Japan. Because of their strict intonation a total re-design is necessary.

One brand that i have fallen in love with is Yamaha. According to Phil Muncy of Muncy Winds, the Yamaha Corp. does what many Japanese companies do: took a well-made instrument (in our case, a Buffet) and makes it even better by adjusting and adding little things. For instance, in the pro yamahas, there are small pads between keys to stop any metal to metal buzz. It's little things like this that make them well. My Yamaha is much better than my A clarinet, which happens to be a Buffet. So keep in mind... yamaha...

HIROSHI-san, I agree with you.
Yesterday, I compared Selmer Signature and my Festival in Tokyo and I realized the instrument is improved so much. Perhaps even Buffet admirers will admit the new flavor and they will love it. Signature's rival is not R-13 any longer. Signature was still in adjustment to tune in 442Hz. Signature will be on sale soon in Japan. I have Selmer 10SII star as well. I want to buy Selmer Signature, but if I do so, I will have 3 Bb clarinets and one Eb and one Bass.

HIROSHI-san, please wait a few months.

I have been playing Concerto's for about eight years now and like thier eveness of scale and great intonation--Tom Ridenour "tweaked" them for me at LeBlanc be fore he left. I recently tried a Signiture and found it to be a much more "even " instrument than my LeBlancs and better in tune, particularly the low E and F and the high Eb and F#. I did not try the A. Bottom line......I like the LeBlancs and continue to perform on them and I could switch to the Selmer any day, but I still like the Sound of my old R-13s the best, even with their inconsistances. So, my decision is wheither to play the easy-playing instruments and give up something of the sound, or to go back to the harder-to-control but better sounding Buffets. Perhaps my audience or my auditioners will make the ultimate decision for me. Sometimes, if you want to work, you have to give them the sound that they want or are used to and R-13s continue to be the "standard" by which all others are judged. Good luck!!!!!!
