Hey guys,
Who plays in the movie soundtracks like "Harry Potter", "Star Wars", or any other movie for that matter. Is it the same studio musicians/ensembles everytime, or is it the NY phil sometimes, Boston Symph other times???? I've always been curious about the making of soundtracks, but can never come across any answers.

I don't know who did "Harry Potter," but my kids liked it.

There was a very nice article in Windplayer a year or so ago about the woodwind doublers in the LA studios. If you go to their website, look for the back issue with the Miami Sound Machine horns on the cover. Well worth checking out.

Wow John, thats an impressive list!...How did you get into that? Are you in a specific ensemble thats used for films?, Or did u have to audition for each individual film?

Hello again, Sarah and all:
I luckily don't have to audition any more for gigs. I did lots of that, but now most of my work is by reputation or recommendation.
I've been doing film dates for over 20 years, and they are contracted by a few NYC music contractors who know me and my work. I don't, by any means, do all the recording work in town, but I do a large amount of it. If they're looking for a great jazz player, I don't get the call. Likewise, if they need an oboe/bassoon doubler, I'm also a NG.
On the other hand, if a film or jingle writer needs a flexible, quick player, with a good attitude, I get the call. I've been very lucky...I've never been out of work, in this wonderful crazy business called "music," and I've been at it for over 40 years!
So, keep practicing, keep a good attitude, keep asking questions, you will make a difference. Music is alive and thriving!

Big deal. I could do all that if I were much more talented, practiced harder, reaffirmed my dedication, had a better attitude and worked that hard to nurture my reputation and make all the right connections.

What big 10...I was at the Univ. of Michigan for a while, does that count?
FYI:
I think that 10 Commandments thing was Charlton Heston.
