 Goodman playing the Copland
Author: Soph

Hello everyone.

For my A2 report/investigation I'm studying the Mozart Concerto and the Copland, I'll predominantly be looking at the clarinet technique and context rather than accompniament but thats beside the point!

Basically our teacher has told us to get the recordings and scores sorted before next term so I do have ages but the sooner the better I suppose.

I have the Marcellus recodring of the Mozart but I would really like the Goodman one of the Copland for obvious reasons but can't seem to find it on British websites excpet in like a box set of all Coplands worked which would cost me a small fortune and with my current rate of pay thats about 2weeks work! lol! There are no decent music shops in sunny Burton-on-Trent so I'm wondering where I can get it from without having to get all the other gumf.

Am I making sense?! Hmmm.... probably not but thats what I'm after so any suggestions would be most welcome!!!!!!

Thank you.

Sophie.

I don't know whether this will work or not but try going to the U.S. Amazon.com site. (There will probably be a link at the bottom of the U.K. web site home page.) When you are at the site search classical music for "copland clarinet goodman" without the quotes. This should return a CD of Goodman playing the Copland along with music of Bernstein, Gould and Stravinsky for under 11 US$ + shipping. If we can order the English version of "Harry Potter" from the U.K. Amazon site, perhaps you can order this CD from ours. Also check out some of the affiliate sellers for even lower prices, particularly if Amazon says they can't ship that title to the U.K.

Best regards,
jnk

BTW, if this thread follows normal form, you will probably get alot of advice about why you shouldn't get the Goodman performance and how this clarinetist or that plays the piece better. You have my permission to ignore all such posts. [wink]

I would suggest that you read two interesting articles in The Clarinet magazine.

The first one is in The Clarinet Volume 23/Number 1 (November/December 1995) entitled "Too Difficult For Benny Goodman - The Original Version of the Copland Concerto" The author, Robert Adelson disects (in detail) the four passages where Goodman requested changes from Copland - in each case for technical reasons.

Additionally, there is a Charles Stier's controversial list of misprints found the Copland Concerto. It was published in The Clarinet Volume 19/Number 2 (February/March 1992).

For what it's worth, the Copland/Goodman recording would be on my Top 5 of greatest/most important clarinet recordings of all times ...GBK

Although I have nothing to add, I do want to express my agreement with both GBK and Jack.

Regards,
John

As always, I too concur with our clarinet onfo geru, GBK. The Goodman recording is not "perfect" but is played as passionately as any performance you will ever hear. The Copland Clarinet Concerto is a quasi classical/jazz mix and no-one does justice to both styles better than Benny.

(Of course, you also have Jack's permission to totally ignor our opinions.)
