 Mouthpiece help wanted!
Author: Rene
Date:   2003-06-25 15:22

I would like to have a little more open mouthpiece than the Vandoren M13 Lyre, I am currently playing, but with the same characteristics. Not too expensive, please. I feel I have to either use harder reeds or a more open mouthpiece, since I am getting to the limits when playing loud in the upper register. Meanwhile, I am struggling to use harder reeds, but I do not like that idea all too much.

Thanks for any help,

Rene

The Vandoren 5JB is pretty open. Generally takes a V-12 2 1/2. At least for me.

The Vandoren 5JB is about as open as you can get and is great for jazz with a very soft reed. Without going that far, I'd recommend trying a Vandoren B45 lyre or dot, which are open but still very classical.

Dear Rene:

I would say the step from the current piece you play should not be too radical...an M13 on would logically go to a M30 or even a B40. the B45Lyre is quite a beautiful sounding piece, but maybe slightly too open at the moment for you to be comfortable. However, give the above a shot and even the B45Lyre and you may make a liar of me with my reccommendations...its all about what you find sound best and most of all comfortable to play on. You have to live with your choice remember...

Sincerely, best wishes

David Dow

Rene,

If you want Vandoren M13 Lyre characteristics I would suggest to reface it. Opening the tip a bit will not change the sound of the mouthpiece.

B40, B45Lyra, B45 dot, 5JB are completely deferent mouthpieces and will never sound the same as M13 Lyra.

All of us make suggestions based on our own experience and our "setups" may not be equivalent to yours. My experience is that mouthpieces are probably the most personal parts of the clarinet so your best bet is to try as many different ones as you can. You can be amazed at the differences you discover and the one that pleases you the most might be a surprise.
