Does anyone know weher I can get a recording of this piece? I'm interested in the transcription for clarinet and guitar, but I can only find versions for other instruments.

It has been transcribed for clarinet and piano by Al Gallodoro. Check his website, it might be listed there. I have a printed copy, and it was available on vinyl way back when we listened to "records".

I played this work, years ago, when I was a viola player and it was one of my set pieces for my Licentiate ... I don't know how it would go for clarinet really, considering the original instrument was more like a 'cello than a viola even.

Michael Collins seems to be playing this piece rather a lot recently.

i've performed this a few times- the first mvt in particular is a favourite of mine. i found a really good transcription by Rudolf Melchart, published by Doblinger- Wien (cat 05 350 ). This version has octave transposition in a few places for anyone playing it on the BASSET CLARINET... now wouldn't it be a luxury to own one of those?
i don't own a good recording of it being played on clarinet, so i'm no help in that department.

I would hasten to add it is a pretty tough little piece, and depending on the version you have of it. The Kirkbride edtion I have on Int. Music is pretty bad!

David,
Could you say a little more about what you mean by your comment that the Kirkbridge edition of this piece is "pretty bad".
I've got the arrangement, but have never performed it. I'm interested to hear your take on it.
Thanks.

GBK: Thanks for the reference. I just ordered it.
I searched for "Schubert Arpeggione clarinet" on Amazon and failed to turn that one up.

There is also a fairly recent recording on Koch International Classics (#7568) of Joann Falletta's transcription of the sonata for clarinet and guitar. She plays the guitar, Robert Alemany plays the clarinet. Search Amazon for "schubert argeggione falletta" without the quotes. You can download brief excerpts.
Best regards,

Richard Stoltzman recorded this piece with Emanuel Ax for RCA back in the 80's. Don't know if it's still in print. I have it on vinyl. It is paired with Weber's Grand Duo Concertant.

I think the Kirbride is weak because the key is unsuited to the Bb, so I have basically changed the notation to suit the A clarinet in the passages which I feel are more suited to this instrument.
I also have edited the edition and revised alot of things, rather than playing the outright part he has written.
In some ways I think the E major and and one part with 5 #s are a bit much for the Bb --so I have done them on the A clarinet.

David,
I concur with you with regards to the arrangement not being very well suited to Bb.
Is your edited part something that you would be willing or even able to share?
Thanks.

At the moment it seems I can't even find this arrangement I devised. I simply wrote out the transposed sections over to the A clarinet transposition.
Best wishes
