 Wisdom Tooth Rage
Author: Micaela

I got my wisdom teeth out two weeks ago tomorrow. I knew it would be a little while before I could play, but I still can't! Well, actually, I can but it hurts a lot. After searching the archives, I've found widely varying accounts of recovery time. I'm fine the rest of the time now...I don't know if it's the pressure or what, but playing hurts. Has anyone been out for more than two weeks after dental surgery? My teeth weren't through yet; I think that might make it worse? It's getting really frustrating- I haven't taken this much time off since I went to France three years ago.

On the other hand, I've already finished the new Harry Potter book. Bring tissues....

Had severely impacted wisdom teeth removed once upon a time many, many years ago. It may have been easier had I not waited so long - I was in my fortys and it was an ordeal. I believe the experience hastened my membership acceptance into the Old Geezer's Club. I wasn't playing at the time, which helped nothing and it was about five weeks before I felt somewhat 'normal'. Had I been playing I believe it would have been more of an incentive to get back to doing something rational.

At your young age your recovery should take far less time and I think you may agree that it's soooo good to know it's already history.

I, too, have pleasant memories of reading a lot during the time I was 'on the mend'. And, yes... so relieved that it was all over and done with.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Micaela, and... Happy Reading.

And, Happy Tootin' too when you get back to it.... :)

I would recommend that you go see the surgeon who did the work. My clarinetist son had this problem until the incision area was cleaned out.
Food was packing into the gap where the tooth had been. I got him a water pik after the dentist cleaned the incision area, and my son cleaned junk out daily. He could play after that. Its healed nicely since then and no more water pik for now.

Although I can't enlighten you on wisdom teeth, I am having jaw surgery either in the Christmas season or early next summer. My orthodontist/surgeon told me that it would be 2 months before he wants me to play...I'm not sure if that means that I can't play or if it just might scew things up...so thats really all the info I can give...so sorry...

OMG! THE HARRY POTTER BOOK ROCKS! I GOT IT THE DAY IT CAME OUT ((I'm not as fast as you)) BUT I'M LIKE 200 PAGES INTO IT! The excitement started in like the 1st and 2nd chapters...I was really please...awww...I dont wanna cry...

I had my wisdom teeth pulled during the summer of 1997, between my first and second years of college. I spent almost the entire summer not playing because it was painful to blow even the slightest amount for a month. I didn't start playing again until a couple of weeks before my sophomore year of college started. The one thing that I am thankful for is that the time off from playing helped me to rid myself of many bad habits that I generated from high school.

BTW, two of my wisdom teeth were impacted. One was also touching a nerve which caused intense pain. I waited almost two months to have them pulled because I didn't want to miss any playing during my freshman year of college. Lots of painkillers and anitbiotics...

Recovery times can differ greatly from person to person for the same surgery!

I had them out in 1970 at the age of 19. All 4 were impacted and were removed surgically. I spent the night in the hospital as that was the only way Blue Cross would pay for the procedure. Times have changed!

It was 2 weeks before I would tolerate anything harder than soup in my mouth, and a good month before I eased back into playing. I had this done over semester break from college.

I just got all four wisdom teeth out a week ago, and they were all impacted. I haven't even attempted to play because my mouth still hurts. Let me know when you can start playing again, and happy clarinetting when you can play again!

Peace and love.

Sheesh, I feel rather lucky! I had oral surgery a couple months ago, and was happily tooting within a week. Maybe you should have it checked out.

I'm getting mine out in a month or so (I only have 2 of them... odd), so I sympathize with the anxiety.

A friend of mine (clarinetist, no less) said that having his wisdom teeth out was so enjoyable, he wishes he could have gotten them out one at a time. The next few days, it was nothing but ice cream and milkshakes, sleep, and good books (and a bit of vicodin), and he recovered in under a week.

Guess I just don't understand why everyone seems to be having their wisdom teeth extracted. Won't this make you dumber? Why not just leave them be? My wife still has hers and she's over 70 years old....and....she's smarter than I am.

Shortly before I had mine out, everyone told me their horror stories about wisdom teeth extraction. Some people have problems, some don't. Mine was really easy (and actually a good excuse to relax). All four were impacted. I'd recommend being awake with just novocaine and laughing gas if possible. Based on others I've talked to, it seems like maybe they're gentler if you're awake and your recovery is shorter. The laughing gas makes it FUN (trust me, it's so surreal you will not care what they do to you!). Also, don't leave the gauze in too long-I kept replacing it instead of just taking it out, and I think that just made them bleed more and made it more painful, because as soon as I took them out and left them out, it got better fast (this was just the end of day 1).

Micaela, is it possible you have dry sockets? Because that would certainly make it rough! If they're dry or infected, it can really slow you down.

Ooh, the laughing gas. Had it for a few fillings. How magical. I thought I was hearing a wondrous new piece of modern music, it seemed to last a half hour, then I realized "The music is their voices!" (like I'd solved a daunting riddle), and I'd apparently been out all of 45 seconds. This was the same visit where I heard them say "Whoops, the gas is on a bit too high."

Luckily, mine aren't impacted, just very troublesome, so I'm hoping it will go smoothly.

I don't think you are supposed to change the gauze that often because it disturbs the blood clot.

I got mine out a little over a year ago, and it took me 2 months before I could think about playing again. However, when they took mine out they had to cut a lot of muscle to get them out which basically made by embouchure like that of a beginning band player, which I still haven't full built it back up. As they said everyone is different, I've known people that come out of it playing a week later back 100%.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out in '98....I believe I started to play a few weeks after the surgery and it hurt a great deal, so I would play for as long as I could, which was probably only 15 minutes, then I would stop...and do it all over again the next day. GRADUALLY, it would hurt less and I could play for longer and longer periods of time. So, I think its just a matter of "breaking it in". Although, its never a bad idea to ask ur dentist to make sure its safe.

I just recall looking like a gopher with her cheeks full of food. One of my teachers asked me if perhaps I had the mumps. Surely you should go back to the doctor/dentist to see if you have an infection, dry sockets, etc. Yuk, being done with wisdom teeth is certainly one of the benefits of being middle-aged.
