hi,
i just started playing jazz a year ago after 12 years of playing classical music. the mouth piece i use is pomarico crystal #1 and it's too closed. the vandoren B45 i have is a little too hard to play with. what mouthpiece do you recommend for jazz? i was thinking about the pomarico #3 or maybe a morgan mouthpiece (that's what they recommended at the store but the wasn't sure).
any help would be appreciated.

I use a Bill Street on bass clarinet for my commercial work, classical gigs, and Broadway. It is a very flexible mouthpiece that can be used for many applications. Give Bill a call and have some sent to you for a trial.
Good luck,

CB - I've posted my modest mp-selection experience before, but will repeat, since you may be following my "route". After being a bit disappointed with Selmer's C* and Bundy 3, et al, I got an older Pomarico 1 [GG] via EBAY, found it to be too close [also] and having established BB friendship with Dave Spiegelthal, asked him to reface it for com-band/musicals/jazz? use. Its my best now and has DS's figures on it for his reference. I later found another [GG] on EBAY, this time a #3, which is quite similar to Daves facing, as a backup, a player only drops them ONCE!!Being quite satisfied with ease of playing with soft reeds, and little if any squeeking [ correct adjustment of Double Register Keying is a requirement!!], I haven't pursued mp search further, but have read glowimg praises, as by JJM above, and for Grabner's
and other's mp-work via the bass-clarinet [group] site and here. Good luck in this never-ending search, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

I played on a VanDoren B45 bass clarinet mpc (with a "Les Thimmig" facing for tenor sax reeds) and was quite satisfied until I tried the Grabner customized Selmer C* mpc. I now use that mpc in all situations where I play bass (with VD 3.5 bass reeds and an Optimum lig)
I've tried a few Pamarico sop mpc's, and do not like them--nice basic sound but too much resistance. My main sop mpc is a Chicago Kaspar #14.

Clark Fobes and Walter Grabner make some of the best I have played.

For jazz Charles Bay's mouthpieces are hard to beat. Very free-blowing and responsive. And they can be had in fairly large tip openings. Mine is .102".

I haven't tried a Morgan on bass but I use a Morgan J7 on Bb soprano. Very free-blowing and responsive piece.
