Anybody have some good insight on the history of C clarinets and their usage today? My only resource is Anthony Baines' "Woodwind Instruments and Their History", which is very good but I am not sure of how it applies to today's world of clarineting.

There are quite a number of books on the cl's, in the chapters referring to "transposing etc" you'll find discussions of the C cl. The best I have is Lawson [Cambridge] "Clarinet", his chapter 3 . Jack Brymer also is good, pages 93+ and 160+ . I have an old Conn C, and have used it in Mendelsohn's Eligah and to play oboe parts on occasion.

I suggest you search the KLARINET mailing list archives under "c-clarinet." My guess is that here are probably more than 100 or so posts over the past three years that I'm aware of regarding the c-clarinet.
