Moose,
Could you add some criteria to describe what you mean by "best"?

I guess I'm just curious as to what the people on this board use. More out of curiosity since I'm pretty satisfied with my current mouthpiece and can't afford a new one right now anyways. So, any particularly good brands that you've come across?

Vandoren 5RVL with Vandoren hand select #4 reeds, BG revalation ligature. Mouthpiece, reed and ligature are all dependent on each other and a matter of what works for you. This is just what happens to work for me.

Commercially (over the counter, no prescription), I find the VanDorens or vintage Selmers to be consistantly the best playing.

Custom products--I have found the Gregory Smith "Cicero Kaspars" and Charles Bay vintage customs to play best--for me, that is.

My current sop mpc of choice is my Chicago Kaspar #14.

But really, what is "best" is what plays best for you (not necessarily me).

The Vandoren range are very good, as are Charles bay. But as previously stated, it is such an individual thing depending on YOUR instrument/ reeds etc. Just make sure you get a tuning machine on it and test the whole range of the instrument before you hand over your cash! Much safer than relying on general opinion i think.

Most of them: IMS, WW&BW, Muncy's, and many more. Look them up in the Retail Directory under Resources and check their individual policy on-line.

"Best" is highly subjective and personal. There are a good number of superb mouthpieces on the marklet. Thus, one needs to try out a selection of mouthpieces to see what works for your personal tonal conception and playing style.

Having said that, I'm a big fan of Ralph Morgan mouthpieces.

I'm currently using an older Chedville my teacher is loaning me. It plays fantastically... And if price is any indicator ($400!!) then It's great...

Seriously, it's a really great mouthpiece. I used to play on a Raffault (Spelling?)... it had a great sound, but was terminally sharp... The Chedville improved my sound AND brought my pitch down to a reasonable place. I'm really pleased with it.

Price is not always the best indicator...

Vandoren B40s and M30s are pretty nice pieces for a lower price.

David Hite does exceptional work for a marginal increase.

Mouthpieces are like individuals and should be judged as such.
