 Bell Frozen

This is not good - just unpacked a Buffet R-13 brand new and put it together - used plenty of cork grease like I usually do with new cork. Disassembled it twice carefully - then played it about 10 minutes. The bell is completely frozen. Anyone know if it's better to let it cool or warm it gently with a heating pad or something?

I would take it to a woodwind repair specialist, rather than apply too much force and regretting it afterwards.
Good luck with it,
Hans

I had that experience with a barrel once. I let the horn go to room temp, then I held the barrel (in your case, the bell), in my hand to warm up just the that part. after a few min., it came off. (The idea being that warming up the outer piece will expand it, while the inner part of the joint will stay cooler.) I've had students with this problem too, and had this work. BUT - take it in and get it fixed as soon as you can. Don't force it!
good luck!

This happened to me on a new Buffet several years ago, and has been reported a number of times on this board with new Buffets. The problem is moisture swelling the wood a bit, and the tenon shoulder (not the cork) sticks in the socket. No amount of cork grease would have prevented it. This is a warranty issue on a brand new instrument, and have the fit checked at the other tenons as well.

Incorrect procedure here will be something you would regret for a long time. Take it back to where you bought it without any further attemps to remove it since some physical adjustment is probably necessary.

Don't do what I did--I put it in the freezer.

Lol nick, I left mine by the window where it was really cold, not sure that was a good idea either!!!!! I had this problem with the barrel on both my A and my Bb, my teacher said it was basically because it is much less humid in France and they tend to swell in other countries, then took a penknife and scraped a bit of wood from the inside of the next joint which sorted it out, but it was my new baby and I was like AARGGHH what are you doing???

I had a similar problem with the barrel of my newly purchased R13 Bb. It was the wood binding not the cork. I think you likely are having a similar problem. I would highly reccomend taking it to a repair tech to deal with.

After you get the repair shop help, have them take off a little of the Bell tenon and examine the other tenons while they're at this...

Humidity is your likely culprit...

Thanks so much for the suggestions, folks - I was about to take it to a repair facility when I tried warming just the bell section with my hand and it worked. That was a moment of blind panic when I posted this message and again I appreciate the input. And I will definitely pursue this as a warranty issue.

Interesting theory about the humidity in Normandy
