Do i really need to upgrade?
Author: Clarinetpunk

Okay...heres my situation; Ive been playing on a Buffet E-11 for 5 years, and i am aware that it is only an intermediate horn, but is a great one. Is sounds awesome and plays well. I lucked out an found a really good one. So i guess my main question is...do i really need to upgrade?

You don't really need to upgrade if you are comfortable with your current instrument. You may wish to upgrade later if you go to college in music or feel your instrument is "holding you back" from progressing. Good luck

You only need to upgrade if you want to impress others or it improves your self confidence

Kristin,
You said: "It sounds awesome and plays well"; therefore, IMO,..... you should probably stick with your "winner".
To confirm that it is not holding you back, you could try some "upgrade" clarinets and see if they do anything for you that your E-11 does not.
In other aspects of life an ounce of image may be worth a pound of performance, but not in clarinet playing.

IMHO the e-11 is the best value for money horn in the Buffet range. They are great for doublers or hobby players and if you can do everything ou want to on it then don't change. They are free blowing, reasonable scale, nice wood, good keywork etc..

How are you at handling peer pressure? "What you're still playing a E-11? That's a horn for middle-school (or---or--or---you fill in the blanks). " Read all the above, gird your loins and ride to the batttle. Hang in there and the best of luck.

My friend who is an eastman bound clarinetist is going there this fall playing an E-11 clarinet. As long as you are happy and you can make the clarinet do what you want, then keep it!

Or, paint "R13" on the barrel

Right...

Let's change everything that helped us arrive successfully to this point...

I second CPW on this one.

My teacher, a professional jazz musician, always came to class with an E-11. It didn't seem to be holding him back at all.

IMHO, NO! Being an older Selmer CT and LeBlanc L7 player, I [however] admit surprise when I asked Doreen [New Orleans, Jackson Square busker!!] what she played so well. An E 11, of course. Sure wish I could play that well!! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I do own three of them and the R13s aren't "that" much better. Great horn.

I suppose I’m going to be the fly in the ointment on this one. No question it's ultimately a personal choice but I believe dedicated musicians owe it to themselves to strive for, own and play instruments commensurate in quality and craftsmanship with their skill level. Beginner, intermediate, or advanced (if one can afford it) a serious lifetime player shouldn’t cheat themselves and experience the best the market has to offer. v/r Ken

No fly/ointment situation, Ken, most of us "elders" will agree with your thots on this ever-present problem of combining skill-level with financial-ability in the desire to own the latest [best??] instrument available. Even I, in my 80s, might improve my comm band/church orch playing!! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks Don; on a personal note (Webmaster permitting) hearty thanks to you and your band for returning the score/parts promptly and in like condition. Most assuredly, Dave and I want you to know the door swings widely open if you're in need again and please, enjoy the CDs! v/r Ken
