 Sore lip
Author: skye

I have been playing in a show all week (South Pacific) and I have a really sore lip, not on the inside but on the outside, it feels sort of numb and bruised. I have only had this once before and I take it it's not a good sign! Just a bit worried as I also have an exam to sit in just over a week, hope it's not the precursor to that horrible lump thing you can get. Any advice apart from stop playing???????

I'd personally seek professional medical advice if you're really concerned, not unqualified advice from a Bulletin Board.

I will if it develops into some sort of dreaded lurgy, just thought some other players may have experienced the same thing and may have solutions, not all doctors play the clarinet

A couple of days rest may be more beneficial heading toward an exam than practising while your lip is sore. Endurance needs to be built up over time and if you have gone in the deep end playing a whole week of a theatre show without being used to it naturally your lip will be a bit dodgy. Likewise you may be using a little too much embouchure and not enough air support, something to think about.

Geez, what's the "horrible lump thing" ? Sounds like a carbuncle which is really bad news. I've heard of even worse things being picked up in the South Pacific.

HI:
It appears you live in the UK. I'd give you the name and address of my dentist here in the NYC/NJ area, as he's helped many of my friends and students with sore lip problems.
Perhaps a local dentist in the UK can make an "appliance" for you that fits perfectly over your teeth, and cannot be seen or felt when made properly.
It will cushion your lip against those sharp teeth, and helps when you practice long hours, or during those long Broadway shows.
Good luck,
